One of the guys at work is a fellow fish keeper (if you can call him that) which has led to some very "interesting" conversations, here is just a few of the things he has come out with.

"You should do water changes as little as possible i only change mine twice a year, fish like living in dirty water its more natural for them"

He recently told me he had done his ONCE YEARLY FILTER CLEAN!!! (he has a large oscar 2 clarisus catfish and a polypterus in a 55g) by running the sponges under the tap "they came up really clean so when i get home im gonna treat the fish to a whole pack of prawns"he said,so when i tried to tell him that he had just wiped out a good majority of the bacteria and should lay off any feeding for a few days he said "well thats good init you dont want dirty bacteria in your tank"

Since his catfish are now way too big for his tank (nearly 2foot long each) he has decided he might take them back to the shop,so i asked him if he was going to replace them with anything?
"yeh"he said "im gonna get myself a AFRICAN LUNGFISH"so when i calmly tried to tell that a lung fish would be far too big for his tank and would destroy his prized oscar he said "nah it wont, oscars are the 'ardest fish you get in fish tanks the lungfish will soon learn its lesson"

Now this bloke is probably the most uneducated person i know so there is no reasoning with him but i thought it would give you all a laugh, plus i cant be the only person in the world who knows a prized idiot like this (can i),if any of you know anybody who comes out with complete cr@p like this write it down here so we can all laugh our a$$es off.

That story reminds me of a friend of Allie's. She had to have a tank after she seen our 55 gallon and she had no clue. We told her all about the water chemistry and she was like I dont want bacteria in with my fish. So to say the least she has one fish left after loosing several and I have given up hope on her and I refuse to talk fish with her

I have a friend who has one of those tall hexagonal column type aquariums about 2m tall. She had a few small fish in it and one large 'lumpy headed' goldfish (not sure exactly what type). The goldfish was about 8" long and the tank was about 18" wide at the largest. I felt really sorry for the poor sod and, although there was plenty of water, it had nowhere to swim back and forth.

The only time it ever got active was when it was fed.

I organised with a mate of mine who keeps goldfish that he would take it (and pay for it) to give it a good home, but she refused. I kept on at her for a while but she insisted that she was keeping it as 'it was pretty'. She had absolutely no idea about keeping fish and no intention of learning. She even paid a maintenance fee to the installers so that they would come in and clean it for her!

After a while I gave up talking to her about it.

About two months ago it passed away - she didn't even seem upset....

She then got the maintenance firm to put in some new fish - she doesn't know what type except that they are a lot smaller. I am not getting involved with it now - too much effort.

Cheers, Eddie

Doesnt a story like that tear you up......there should be some kind of cruelty to fish police and they should be able to arrest people like that. I had been a fish keeper before and I took a break from it for awhile before returning to it. I took every chance I could get to read up and learn, not to mention to talk to people, so I could learn. I return and I find myself reading everything I can to continue my learning.

Personally I think they should make people take aptitude test to make sure they are smart enough to raise fish, and I think they need to start with the LFS in the Indianapolis area......lol
It is so bad that Allie and I have been thinking of ways to find the money to open our own store......the only bad thing there is I wouldnt want to sell any fish....lmao

Sorry about the ranting and raving folks but I do get have a tendency to get work up over situations like this......

Me too and i'm sure that other people will agree with you there. I go into different places and see red cap goldfish quite often hanging upside down 24/7 (especially the larger ones) and i always wonder if they ever get bored :fun: being like that? looking at the ceiling instead of looking out of the tank.

I hate to see fish suffering from disease i.e ICH, Fin Rot and poor water quality, i just wanna shake the pet shop owner and say 'look can't you see they are suffering'

Yeah I went recently to a local chain that claims to have the best fish in Indianapolis and all their tanks were nasty. What was worse is they have three huge display tanks that has montser red tail cats and pacus as big as my sons head and these fish were at the top gasping for air and one was on its side and the people there didnt seem to care. I finally had to leave the fish room cause I was about to go off, more worried about selling the fish than taking care fo them.
It makes me so mad to see places like that not care for the fish. I feel that if we take fish and put them in our tanks we have a moral obligation to provide the best care for them possible. I guess the way I see it is this.....I take pride in my tank and in my fish......I expect others to do the same.....

Sorry for the rant

Hey Les dont apologize for caring about fish and getting mad that they are being mistreated. Don't you have some kind of animal rights org that will go raise a huge fuss and advocate for them. Look, I live in a litlle bitty town less than 3500 population; where the bigest business is timber and farming. We are always hearing on the radio and TV about some idiot sticking spikes in trees or handcuffing themselves to the trees for goodness sakes. We almost everyday have to listen to some, what they call them around here, "tree hugger" that has brought a lawsuit against the farmers cause one type of fish or another is ready to spawn or something and the water for the farmers is gone. POOF
Don't get me wrong, I value our natural resources greatly but get tired of some of the crud that goes on around here on a daily basis. Basically, I guess I am trying to say call the American Humane Society and ask them to take a peek at some of the bad ones. If you get a couple of the "shops" on TV the rest will want to avoid that little fiasco.

Hope it works out. And by the way....You can always sell the fish as long as you have room, an acre or two, for your fav's! :fun:

Man I remember when i first wanted fish and I bought a couple of goldfish in a bowl with regular tapwater with clorine and they died in 2 hours.

I was recently in Wal-Mart, and the guy in the fish department was telling a lady that the fish in the tank she was looking at had Ich. But he assured her he could get her one without it cause he knew what he was doing.....

Gl dont get me started on people from Wal Mart in their fish department, I honestly believe that anyone who had a gold fish when they was 10 could work the fish department at Wally World. Very sad.
As far as the chain that looked bad I was back in the store 2 days later and the tanks looked much better, but I did notice something....their people get paid a commision on each fish....That is wrong in so many ways

   2 times a year. A tank is not like the wild. There original habitat is so much diffrent from a tank. You have to clean it more in a tank.

Thats a really crazy idea  :/

:grr: ...people like that should be stuffed in a 2'x2' closet and have methane, and industrial sludge pumped in on a regular basis, 65 lbs of raw meat dropped in every day and cleaned out twice a year, and a 1000 watt bulb shining down on them all day...fairs fair!
