As I'm trying to get my betta's to breed, I've been conditioning them, and then I have put the female in the tank of the male in a separate see-through container.
It's obvious that the female is very ready to breed, vertical stripes, fatter belly, doing the head down dance, every sign is there...

But the male: he doesn't want to make a bubble nest :(
He has done it before though...
And he is displaying for the female...

anything I can do? or should I just give up on him breeding.

Is he young? If he is....sometimes it will take a few tries before he realizes he needs to build a net.

Patience is the key....i wouldn't give up just yet.....I'd give it a few more trys, and then if that doesn't work I'd try a different male while the female is still ready to breed.

He's an adult, but has never breed before.
He's the only male I've got.
It's really getting annoying now, she hanging under de styrofoam cup with her head down! Could she be more obvious?? :)

(oh, I've released her from the container to see what happens, still no sign of him building the nest)

What tank are you using for a breeding tank? Maybe you should put her in a cylindrical container and place it in his tank. It will introduce both of them without him leaving his domain and without harm to her.

he's not gay :)
he actually shows all breeding behaviour: displaying his fins and such. He even spends a lot of time under the styrofoam cup, it's just like he doesn't seem to know how to build one anymore...

The tank is about 10g, water level is good for breeding, water conditions are perfect. And I use indeed a cylindrical container, well, now she is out of it, but she's been in there for 2 days...
