there are several pinned threads and google...

I wouldn't recommend buying a book for something you can read for free

Hi...I TOTALLY disagree (sorry). Reading a forum is one of the best way to 'fine tune' your aquarium techniques and, some people don't like books. IMO, you just can't beat a well written book with photos, diagrams and charts. Besides, if you don't have a laptop, damn that book goes everywhere and reads quite nicely with lunch or coffee.

Here are some great books that give EXCELLENT starter foundations and some even just look great on the shelf:

1) The New Marine Aquarium: Step-By-Step Setup & Stocking Guide
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846

2) Jeffrey Kurtz's The Simple Guide To Mini-reef Aquariums
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=books

3) Eric Borneman's Aquarium Corals : Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=books

4) Robert Fenner's The Conscientious Marine Aquarist: A Commonsense Handbook for Successful Saltwater Hobbyists http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...g=UTF8&v=glance

Hope this helped. SH

All the books listed are great, if your only going to get one, get the concientious marine aquariust. By far the best one of the bunch. I also have looked into getting "The Reef Aqauarium vol 1 + 2" for christmas. 55$ at overstock.com is best price ive been able to find. Also try "the complete saltwater encyclopedia" I have browsed the book at the store and it looks pretty good, lots of large color photos.

The Saltwater Handbook, i guess the publisher is Barrons. Lots of good beginner stuff. But those little questions, like how do i mix the salt, may be better asked online b/c ive never seen that in a book. I dont know about most ppl but i totally understand and dont mind answering those. A lot of times, theres just something that u missed like when i was starting out, i was under the misinterpretation that live rock was like crushed coral, i had no idea that it was just chunks of big rocks with little dudes living in em. I guess no one ever specified!
