My two male variatus platies have 3-5 vertical stripes on their sides. I've heard this trait is desirable, but I'm not entirely sure.
So here are my questions: Are they a special type? Are the stripes desirable? Will they pass down to fry?
Pictures will be posted soon. Thanks!

I have never had platy's but I do plan on either breeding them or mollies in my new tank setup.  If you like the stripes, then they are desirable. :) It is all what you like, I personally think it would make for a beautiful fish.
As far as it passing down to offspring there is a chance. It really depends on whether or not the gene is dominant. (chances are these two are brothers or related somehow) which means there probably is a fairly good chance of it being passed down if only one of the males parents had this gene. If both of the males parents have it (they would probably be related as well so watch out for serious inbreeding in your tank) then it could be recessive. Sorry it can be a bit confusing, but overall, Yes, there is a possibility that offspring can have stripes.

I've had small ones with light stripes but they disappeared as they reached adulthood.

I have 4 platy fry in the tank right now with stripes. I believe my Blue Platy is the mother and one of my striped males in the father! :D
