Commone name(s): Striped Anostomus or Striped Headstander

Scientific name: Anostomus anostomus

Family: Anostomidae

Size: 7inches, 20cm

Diet:This fish will accept dry and frozen foods (brineshrimp i found is preferred) as well as things like cockell and mussell occassionally.

Compatibility: This fish is fairly peaceful, community fish, which is better off in a larger tank with fish of roughly the same size. Fish i'd recommend to keep with the Anostomus are:
Leporinus fasciatus fasciatus -Black banded leporinus size:12"

Abramites hypselonotus -High-backed Headstander size 5.5"

Distichodus affinis- size 8"

Tank conditions:
Temperature -between 22-26degrees C
PH-around neutral

Layout:
A good environment for the anostomus would be that of a tank of around 3', gravel substrate with pieces of bogwood and lots of plants so this fish can swim around securely.

To give another side of the story with this fish, it has a well earned reputation of being a scale eater, and will browse on the scales of slow moving flat sided fish such as Angels, Silver Dollars and Gouramies.

As it gets larger, it becomes more territorial and aggressive towards others of it's own species and related fish. Also as it grows, the body becomes more barrel like whilst the snout does not seem to grow giving adults a pronounced "long nosed look".
