I have a problem, although I am a little unsure of what caused it and what the problem is. Situation:
10 gallon freshwater tank (been up and running since January)
All water levels are perfect, they have been tested at the LFS as well as with my home testing kit. Everything is great.
Currently stocked with:
3 Neon tetras
2 Phantom tetras
2 Pristella tetras
2 Otos
A few weeks ago I converted from fake to two live plants. I was told that snails would be good for the tank, so took no precautions to get rid of them. For a while there were no snails (obviously some eggs were on the plants) and three days ago I noticed one snail... and by the next two days there were at least 12. The more I read about it and realized that they would be pests by numbers for such a small tank, I decided to get rid of them, so I've picked them out and got them in a big jar (would rather have them there than to just kill them, lol).
Also to note is that a pristella tetra had a spot of body fungus, which was treated with Maracyn 1 (a few months this helped to rid of the fungus) and it was successful.
Yesterday (Monday) I did a 40% water change to get rid of the medication and clean out the tank, this was when the snails were removed.
My two otos who normally are happy fellas now are hiding under a rock and look stressed. They are resting on their fins (good sign that they aren't on their stomachs) but nonetheless do not seem happy and aren't on the tank sides as usual. One is more active than the other, but one guy has been under the same rock shadow for most of the day and lots of yesterday (he is breathing and has re-positioned himself several times, it is not immobile). I noticed a few minutes ago that the more active oto has some sort of injury where his side fin meets his body, just a little away from his head... it is hard to tell but it looks like the other oto may also be in this condition. It's hard to describe, but it seems to be like skin missing.
Am I just worrying too much or did the snails or medication upset the otos?
I did search and could not find anything related to my problem.
Thanks everyone in advance,
Bryce
