Hi all

Whilst driving home last night, a dog ran out in front of my car....i didnt hit it, but it was on a busy road, it was pelting down with rain, we had just previously had a nasty storm, I thought oh god I cannot leave it, it only looks like a pup, so I turned my car round and parked up in a layby, the dog had run into a field, we were in the middle of nowhere, well not quite but no houses about, my children were in the car, my son almost in tears as he was really upset by what had happened, I got out of the car and saw the dog, she was shivering, I tried calling her, she was scared, so I crouched down, for 10 mins trying to get her to come to me, she had no collar on, a boxer/staffie cross, she had her tail between her legs, and was soaking, eventually she came to me, but was very scared, I thought right I am taking her home, after finally getting her in my car, I drove home.

I rang the dog warden who said, it was out of hours and could I keep her while tomorrow...I said yeah no problem.

What I didn't realise was how attached I would get to her, only had her overnight, and till this afternoon, but she was a bloody lovely dog, obedient, great with the kids, and also very naughty, have spent all day with her in my garden, playing frisbee, and my son kindly gave her one of his tennis balls, my fella said you will get attached to her, and I said I won't, but hell for the first time he was right...lol.....when the dog warden came, she checked her for a microchip, but she didnt have one, she said she's only a young un...bout 8 months. I said surely someone must own her, she said well perhaps the storm spooked her, or maybe she is not the cute little puppy she used to be, she said it happens a lot, people get dogs they grow. then they do not want them, she also said, maybe someone has gone on holiday and just didnt want to pay kennel fee's, she said or hopefully someone has lost her, she said I will check the pound register when I get back......I went to the van with the dog, she knew, her tail went between her legs, and as she lifted her into the crates in the back of the van, she started struggling, when she shut the door, the dog just looked at me, I said oh god I will have to go inside, I feel a bit upset. My son ran inside, and ran back out and gave the dog warden the ball, a tin of food and a box of biscuits we had got her, aww bless he has spent all day with her too.

I came inside, and as daft as it may seem, I got upset, as did my son, he was crying saying I want to keep her, I explained that she probably had a home somewhere and some other little boy or girl might be very upset, because she had gone missing. I do suspect with how well behaved, and well looked after she was, that she has had a home, I only hope someone is looking for her.

I do not know really why I told this story, just thought I would share it, my fella said you have done your good deed for the day, I said I know, and I have enjoyed having a dog in the house, with renting a property and working, it is impossible for us to have a dog, even though we are both big dog lovers, we have 2 cats, but you just cannot beat a dog for companionship!

I sometimes wish I didnt get so attached to animals, I even get attached to my fish and feel fed up when one dies..!

I have placed an advertisement in the local paper, saying when and where I found her...I was wondering of ringing the dog warden up in a week or so, just to see if anyone has claimed her, but they may think I am nuts...ha! But I know if they tell me she hasn't been claimed, I will be even more upset.

Anyway....if anyone might want a beautiful boxer/staffie cross, then let me know...lol.....thats if she is not claimed, she would make someone a wonderful pet, and if it wasn't for my circumstances, I would of taken her myself.

Debbie

You did the right thing but you should have kept her lol.

As for ringing the dog warden, If i was you I probaly would, I think they put dogs down after a couple of weeks if they cant get a home.

Aww do not tell me that...I thought if the dog was healthy and non aggressive, they would try and rehome them? Please someone tell me they do?

Arrggghhhh...I haven't rang up yet, am scared to, incase they tell me she has not been claimed.... :( :(

Anyway...I have a pic of her....do you think she looks settled after just one night?

Bloody hell....I have thought about nothing but this dog all week....I wish I did not love animals so much...lol!

Debbie, you did much more than most others would have. I know it's frustrating, but we can't keep every dog that crosses our path. If that was the case, I, myself would have 20 dogs by now and 10 cats. For me, there's been so many strays and fosters in the past few years. And yes, there were ones in particular that I wanted to keep too. But it's not your fault that so many other people in the world don't take care of their pets and leave such an insurmountable burden for the rest. Don't feel guilty over something that's not your fault.

Used to do the SPCA kennels meself for almost 12 years, and as sad as it may seem, some of the bigger centres only keep them for 3 to 5 days before the decision is made.....

I had some in my kennels for almost 6 months before I finally decided that I will not find a home for it.... They get "kennel stressed" after a while and the furure of the animal has to be considered.....

Will it be humane to keep it in the kennel indefinitley or is it better to put it down.... Always a very difficult one.
