hi all,

I Started off with 6 Tigers, at the time i didnt realise but i had bought 4 males and 2 females, over the past 2 months there has been alot of aggression between the male tigers which has resulted in 3 of the males dieing....... I know have 1 Male and 2 Females

I noticed today that the male is chasing/following the females around, the female then enters a secluded spot around the back of rocks or plants and will then 'shiver' the male copies this and 'shivers' too, whilst doing this the male then wraps his tail fin around the top of the female, thsi process lasts for all over 4 seconds and then they swim off and do it again and again,

I think they are mating but want to be sure.

Does the female scatter her eggs and then the male fertalis' them or does the eggs get fertalised whilst still in the female??

Cheers for any help,

Daniel

Sounds like they are indeed mating. They are egg scatterers and the male will fertilise the eggs as they are being laid. If you want to try to rear the fry you will need to move the eggs to a seperate fry tank before they get eaten. Not sure how many days it takes for tiger barb eggs to hatch, then once they are hatched there will be a period when the fry are living off their own yolk sac. After that you will need to feed them something like liquifry and keep the water very clean.

Ive tried to find any eggs but couldnt see any, i believe the time from laying to hatching is 48 hours.

I doubt veyr much they will survive though ive a very busy community tank!

How do you tell males from females? I never could.

When mature, male tiger barbs will show bright red noses, his dorsal fin will have a red line above the mainly black fin and his ventral fins will turn bright red. When in spawning condition or fighting for a higher “rankâ€￾ in the shoal, the males stripes turn a slight metallic green colour. And the tips to his upper body scales turn almost black and shine bright orange in certain light.
The females however, keep their pale yellow noses (may turn slightly pale red at times, which makes it tricky to determine their sex in store). They only show a small area of red at the tip of the dorsal fins, and ventral fins will stay pale red. In females, their stripes stay black.
