I finished my water changes early last night (I now have a pump and hosepipe :D ) so I settled down to half watch a bit of tv and watch my tanks. I started to hear a strange thump thump sound, so I turned down the tv and listened, it seemed to be comming from Vinny's tank. I sat for ages looking into the tank and listening for this odd noise but it had stopped, so I settled back on the sofa and as soon as I started to watch the tv the thumping started again. I moved all the sofa and checked the filters, no nothing from them, I checked the air pump, nothing from there either, as I had my head in the cabinet I heard the thumping again, it was definately comming from the tank. I searched the tank looking for a crack or something (I was starting to panic) but found nothing. It was a bit difficult because as I was trying to look through the glass Vinny kept looking back at me getting in the way. Satisfied there was nothing wrong I put the sofa back and settled down again, then the thumping started again!. I took the light bar off and checked that but nothing, checked the brace bar wasnt cracking that was fine. It was starting to drive me mad because each time I looked into the tank the thumping stopped. :S

I sat the other end of the sofa right next to the tank and pretended to watch the tv with half an eye on the tank, then the thumping started again and discovered what it was. It was Vinny, he was in front of the coconut with his nose just inside it and he kept opening his mouth and closing it really fast and the coconut was amplifying the sound, I sat still watching him do this for a while then he realised I was watching him and just sat still in the water rolling his eyes at me

I hear a tapping sound on the glass sometimes, and wonder what it is, untill i see my male demspey nudging a large chunk of wood against the glass :p Gotta love em :)

 that's brilliant! I also like the bit about him getting in your way when you are trying to look at something in the tank. Mine is usually Boris, but Mister Orange does it a lot as well!

We were feeding the fish one day and heard this weird rasping sound. Took us a while to realise it was Boris crunching his pellets  When he eats beetles it sounds like someone crunching minstrels!

I got use to the noise from the pictus cats, they sort of buzz occasionally.

It was just spooky because I was trying to watch a program on monster catfish, the bloke caught a massive red tailed catfish and it was making grunting noises, soon after that bit Vinny started playing his coconut bongo's, knowing Vinny he was jealous I was looking at another fish

I was puzzled by a tapping sound coming from one of my tanks, too, but it took me a while to discover what it was...the eldest male SB pink convict, George, had obviously learnt that by slapping his tail fin quickly against the thermometer it would make a loud tap and get my attention! He just wanted feeding, greedy guts! He usually does it if I don't feed them as soon as I come home from work.

If I dare to sit down before feeding them they all swim to the same end of the tank, very still and just staring at me. As soon as I stand up they all rush to the water surface, expecting to be fed. But if I sit down again and leave them waiting a bit longer, George gets impatient and that's usually when he starts with the tapping haha :hyper: !

Don't worry...I do try to feed them on time every day but I just find it interesting occasionally to watch their behaviour when their routine is changed.

Makes me laugh when I hear people say that fish are boring

I have no problems working out when Buster, my larger flowerhorn, wants attention. He just leaps out of the water and crashes into the lid. It can surprise visitors who are not expecting it !

 so much for fish being quiet pets. Yesterday I packed up some of the baby rotties and had bubble wrap in the kitchen 2 kids dying to pop the bubbles! Once the fish were packed up I fed the other babies left in the tank (been starved for 24 hours for shipping) the noise of 50 odd baby rotties slapping their mouths was quite loud, so much my 3 year old came stamping into the kitchen shouting at me for popping bubbly wrap and not letting him do it. I gave in and gave the kids some to pop because they would not believe that it was the fish!!
