I was thinking of some wierd setup so that a Really big tank can have frogs on one side and fish on the other, you could use a rock or something to seperate them, youd have to seal it mabey using the same thing the edges of the tank are sealed with.

And have the excursion (water coming out of the filter) on the fish side and the incursion on the other side. using the rock the waterlevel will be high on the fish side and coem down on the frog side in like a waterfall. which it is then retaken by the filter and set back to the fish side. Cool right? I made a "diagram" with photoshop.

You could use a sheet of glass or perspex to divide the tank then dress up the divide with rocks.

One thing tho, if that tank is going in say your living room, that falling water will drive you nuts!

well it would be a fine idea with some tweeking
i'll give you some pointers and you can improve

first of all,
the water fall may pose a problem
alot of frogs will readily eat fish so try to pick a mid water dwelling fish to avoid jumpers or the fish being dragged over the edge by current
or you could create a gaurd about and inch high with a softer mesh (nothing the fish could scrape on)
i see you have the water coming lower then the peak of the rock
i would not suggest you just use a simple slit, as i would worry (depending on the size, and build of the fish) them getting wedged in the hole

secondly the waterfall possesses another problem
feeding the fish will prove difficult
so have fast access to the pumps (like a simple switch)
the food will go too fast over the edge, soiling the frogs habitat and starving the fish
if you can find a species that will readily eat a sinking pellet then you are ok
otherwise you will have to shut down the pumps for 2 minutes each feeding

and thirdly are you considering any source of heating or are you going to go with a cold water aproach such as a type of minnow?

oh yeah and will you have any filtration? if no filtration or heat i think a variety of white cloud minnows would go marvelously
how big will this tank be?

other then that i think this may work
and maybe it will be sort of relaxing if placed in the right room
just make sure the pumps aren't going too fast (not too much suction)
that way the water slowly trickles down the rock :hyper:
making a true water fall

now you've got me all excited
i may just have to steal your design :shifty:
would that bother you?
if its alright maybe i'll build it with you and show you a picture :D

Looks good. be sure to post pictures when it's done!
uh hehe no. It's just an idea I don't have the money to do that, nor the space, I think I may have the time but not the space or money.

The idea is up for grabs, I wouldn't be able to do this, but some fine people here might. I think pointy kitty got it though. :D

To Stryker: Good idea

To pointy kitty: the water would go over the rocks, not through a slit, the diagram is just really crappy, sep for the frog sorta. But more of a focused water fall like having two rocks together shaped like an m and the water going through the middle of the m. The incursion/excursion is the filter, I just didn't show the actuall filter. Heater I didn't think about. soft mesh woult be a good idea. I think this should go in a larger tank though.

to endparenthesis: Yeah thats where I got the idea I saw one of those in my LFS but the horizontal sepereation annoyed my so I made it verticle.

sounds a lot like the Water's Edge Viquarium. They don't make them anymore, but here's oneon ebay:
