I have just 4 cold water fish. But about 4 weeks ago a code shaped shell object was stuck to the side of the tank, obviously with some sort of slug thing in it attaching itself to the glass. I didnt see this often so didnt think too much of it. But I now have 7 of these things, some very small.
What are they ?
Are the dangerous to the fish ?
Do I need to get rid of them as they are mulitplying ?
Any help or advice would be appreciated
Thanks

Sounds like a snail, take them out if you see them ,they will over run your tank.I got them in my tropical,I ended up with 100's.

Cone shaped sounds like the Malaysian Trumpet Snail. The big problem with these guys is they're asexual so one's enough. They spawn live young & are really hard to get rid of. On the plus side they clean up uneaten food & airate the substrate cos the burrow thru it during the day & come out at night. I trick I've heard helps control them is to put a dish with some food in it in the tank then turn the lights out. Wait a few hours & it'll have snails all over it so pull it out, being careful none fall off. But there's not bulletproof way of wiping them out bare stripping the tank & boiling everything. :(

You can get a clown loach, or two, 3 would be even better.
They would get rid of them all eventually as they are prolific snail eaters.
I got rid of mine just for that reason, you see, I want malaysian trumpets to breed like mad.
One, too use as an extra clean up crew and two, to feed my electric blue crayfish and dojo's. :D
Even my bala's eat em when they are small, which was a total surprise to me when I saw them gulp em down!

They both like a little snack every now and again.

:D

I have goopd news and I have bad news, just so that youy have hope while you read the bad news I'll save the good news for last.

Malaysian trumpet snails release there young live, but they are really hatching from eggs inside of a special pouch in the head of the parents. so crushing a snail the offspring may infact live, they can live in horrible conditions for months by closeing there operculums up and some will never come out of the gravel to be eaten, I had a puffer tank that I thought had been cleared of the infestation but they came back up again after popcorn was gone.

The good news is that they dont harm anything and clean up waste, youy still have to vacume the gravel and be careful not to overfeed but they really do eat alot of waste.
