i got a pair of rainbow cichlids theu had eggs and hatched. so i put about 30 to 40 of the young in to a fry tank one that floats in the big tank. after a few hours i seen the male and female sucking up the other fry that i left in the pit they made and taking them to the fry tank and blowing them through the gaps so that they were all in the same tank. has any one ever seen this before, got up this morning to find about 7 left in the fry tank others must have got out and found the bottom of my other fishes stomache. but all is well as looks like there mateing againg female has gone all black on the belly and male is strutting his stuff.

I can't say I have ever seen mine do that trick but I find that the adults are good parents and will strongly protect fry for days after they first hatch. When I want to raise some I siphon off the number that I want and place them in a 10 gallon where I can care from them out of sight of the adults. In that isolated location I am able to feed them microworms to get them off to a good start. I then follow up with BBS and get them to a crushed vegetable flake as soon as practical. I find that my adults breed like rabbits if I feed them lots of fresh greens. You might be surprised how much a few handfuls of duckweed will do to get them going.

I've not seen that but i once put half the fray in a floating trap with the rest in the main tank with the parents, in the morning i came back and found the adult female in happily sat in the fry trap and the male still in the main tank with the rest of the fry. to stop the fry escaping out of the trap place a stocking over the bottom, that way water will still flow through but the fish fry won't get out

Why on earth did you take the fry away from the parents. They are cichlids for crying out loud they look after there fry very well to the point of obsessive. You should leave the fry with them or better still put the pair in a tank of there own so you would be able to have a better chance of saving all the fry. But bare in mind you will have a lot of fry once the rainbow cichlids get started.

thanks for your replys fellers we are never to pld to learn new things. my rainbows are the first ive had of those type of fish. all my fry bar too have gone now so hope to get some more. should i raise the temp in the tank to get them started its about 27 dec cel in there give or take .1 or 2 dec. what sort of greens can i feed them a good list would be helpfull thanks :good:

if you have separated the fry from
the parent's it might be hard
putting the fry back with them
as they a likely got reject them
and then eat them
