i vaugely recall seeing a programme on the how and why of stonehenge. one of the theories was the use of a disc like widget to move the stones from a to b.
does anyone know any other info on this?
or
have any other ideas for moving any large heavy object in general?

Disc-like widget = wheel?

The problem you would still have is lifting the tank/cabinet onto the widget in order to move it.

The rugby club thing was a serious suggestion, by the way.

the disc like widget was used the other way round from a wheel, so that the object being moved was still "walked". kina like a gogo ball without the top bubble. the closest i've been able to find is wally wallington and his stone.
the widget doesn't need to be big/high, so the effort to lift one end of the object to get the widget under is minimal compared to lifting the whole thing.
the rugby club thing would have been the perfect solution if i were not a complete recluse and seriously the thought of opening my door to people and letting them into my house brings me to tears.

Ah, now I gotcha.

Hmmm, lock man nailed it when he said you'll still need to lift it on the disc widget thingy whatever that is.

Or as a long shot, alternatively get 4 or 5 steel poles or poles of wood of even thickness, does not need to be very long, just the width of the cabinet (not the length) and just lift one end of the tank cabinet slide a pole underneath widthways and roll cabinet forward on the pole and slot in another pole, roll forward and another pole and so on and when a pole comes out from rear of cabinet, bring this one forward to the from of cabinet, roll cabinet forward and so on and so forth,   thing is though this COULD work but so much easier with someone to help balance the tank and cabinet.

Or perhaps use 2 of these instead, lift one end on one of these and the other end on the other and simply roll to wherever you want......

If I was on my own and no option, I would attempt this TBH. But a little pricey, might get cheaper ones if you search online maybe.

But still a big risk of back or muscle injury if you were to carry out on your own

Am just giving you general alternative ideas but I still maintain best policy would be to get someone to help out, a close family member perhaps?

Lifting one end might have the effect of letting the tank fall back down the slope?

Sorry, I understand now. I didn't mean to be insensitive.

I don't really know what to suggest.

i had thought of the first method you mention but my fear with that is the overall hight (over 4ft) is greater than the width (front to back) therefore there would be a strong possibility of the whole thing tipping if the center of gravity shifts as it moves over the poles.
i do have a trolly similar to the link posted that i use for water changes but these things have a tendancy to scoot out from under the object if the object is not lowered straight down on to it.
the other option is 2 poles at a right angle to the front, lift one end slide pole in from front to back about 1/4 of way along and same again at the other end, then "walk" the object along the 2 poles. this keeps the correct center of gravity with regards the height being greater than the width and the length is greater than the height so should prevent overtipping sideways.
i am used to back pain, i live with it every day so a wee bit more wont really make any difference, hence the disregard for any injury to myself.
i do realise the best thing is to get help but this is not an easy thing for me to do.

@ TLM
it's ok, you didn't know the full circumstances, i have been driven to desperate measures before and your suggestion did appeal to my sense of humor :)
for the tank to shift in the way you suggest there would have to be a pretty decent angle and i doubt i will be able to lift/lever it high enough for that.

Is your tank and cabinet/stand sitting on carpets or a smooth wooden or tiled floor?

i will def let you know how this goes. i have high hopes for them and should have a set and the tank moved by the beggining of next week :)
once again thank you and to everyone who helped to get to this solution, i withheld information, the doing of which i have admonished in another post (i don't know which is the emotocon for shame), without everyone's input the full facts may not have been know and what appears to be the perfect solution found :)

got it shifted :D
just having a wee cup o tea before i start filling it back up again, fish still in plastic boxes

will give a better update in my journal once i'm finished and got a bit more time :)

Did you get the product I linked you with or have you got someone in to help or another way of shifting the cabinet and tank perhaps?

Just that I thought would take another few days for delivery.

Anyway, am so glad you managed to move the tank and hope you are happier where the cabinet and tank is now

i didn't get the exact product you linked but something very similar from a local hardwear store, deliveries are a bit of a no-no for me too

it's now sitting smack, bang in the middle of the livingroom, will have to move it back once i've redecorated etc.
