Ok, so I have seen and I'm sure someone out there reading this may have a set up like this but I don't know if it safe, even though I'm sure it is. Anybody have or seen a large aquarium (75G or larger) that use a large amount or pile of stones in the center of the tank as the center point?? Now are those usually real rocks/stone most of the time like used in salt water reefs?? My concern was the weight. You know how when a 75 gallon aquarium tank is filled it can weigh up to and over 800 lbs and all that weight is evenly distriubuted throughout the glass 'walls' and the weight evenly distributed on the floor if a wooden stand is used and not legs. Can the glass on the bottom holding the majority of the weight still hold the stone and be safe?? Because that weight is pushing down on just those square inches of glass plus the water above and throughout. I'm sure the answer is simple but I don't know it :( Thanks!!

most aquariums are made of glass that is a suitable thickness to hold the water and some rock. if you plan on having lots of rock then you can order a tank with a thicker base. However, the rocks displace some of the water so even when a tank is full of rock the weight isn't much more than if it was just full of water.

Yea ... i think rock weigh's lighter under water.

I have loads of rock in my tank, most in the centre. I put a peice of egg crate along the bottom to disperse the weight evenly.

Depends if it's tempered glass. That is strong stuff and can take a lot of punishment. No need for extra precautions.

Here's a picture of it

for those who don't know what it is. Does anyone know why it's called egg crate? ????

I just use a sheet of inch thick polystyrene to even it out. Then again, it's only under my 9g tank...
