Hi,

I have an 8 UK gallon/38 litre tank which is 50cm long 25cm deep and 30 cm high (It's all I can accomodate in our small lounge).

I have set the tank up with black fine gravel, a piece of drift wood and planted 1x Cambomba 1x green tall Sword plant and 1x small red Sword plant.

Please can you suggest some fish that would happily live in such an enviroment.

Thanks for reading my post.

Hi aqua andy, welcome to the forum.

This site has some different ideas for biotopes http://www.mongabay.com/fish/biotope_countries.htm

The problem is the tank is small so you are limited to what you can put in there.

Personally if i had the set up you have i would get 5 corydoras habrosus or 5 corydoras pygmeus, 2-3 otocinclus and a betta.

Sorry i can't be more help

tetra I love them :). Neon / cardinal combo r the best.

Hi Emma & IMCL85,

Thanks for your suggestions.

I like the idea of Corydoras, Otocinclus & Tetra's.

How many could I have of each without overcrowding the tank when they are fully grown?

Would 3 Corydoras, 3 Otoclinclus & 8 small Tetra's be OK?

Is that enough of each species for them to be happy and interact?

Would this combination be a community? Or would it be missing something?

Hi Andy,

Sounds like you've got a great tank idea there and the plants and driftwood are a perfect start. I would encourage you to select either the dwarf corys or the otos, not both. 8g UK is just not a lot of space and both species prefer to be in larger groups.

Depending on the brand/model filter on the tank, I'd personally go with 4-5 otos or corys (totally your preference) and 5-6 small tetras. Don't feel like you have to limit yourself to neons/cardinals though. There are some other very nice small tetras out there, including silvertip, head and tail light, and black phantoms.

The only other fish I would suggest as a possibility in a 10g South American tank is the Bolivian Ram, which would be more of a "centerpiece" fish for your tank.

Anyway, it's all food for thought... Good luck with your selections!

There's been loads of good advice in this thread :) . Just wanted to add that cardinals and otos are two fish that may find it difficult to adapt to a new tank. I haven't had this problem with cardinals though, my cardinals were pretty tough!

P.T.
