Many of the threads in Tropical discussion are about stocking, so much so that they seem to be drowning out the rest of the threads. Would a stocking subforum be a good idea?

no point...it will just make the forum less user friendly and efficient.
stocking threads are general tropical discussion so IMO they should remain there.

IMO this forum has been divided up enough any more and it will be too hard to navigate and will loose effectiveness...ive given up finding threads...i just use view new posts function

add to truck's comments, the fact that there is NO specific stocking level, for any tank or group of fish. volume, hight, width, amount and type of filtration. all have a direct effect on how many fish, a "given" tank can take. you wont go far wrong if you stick to the "inch per gallon" rule. as you develop your experience and knowledge. yo can make adjustments to this.

it's best not to have a stocking subforum IMO as a lot of people who ask about stocking are new and need other help and might just get ignored if in a stocking sub forum only as a lot of members might just avoid this sub forum
and seeing as stocking depends on so many factors - size of fish etc - its important that they arent shoved away in some subforum that could be easily ignored and then fish suffer

I know not everyone will take the advice offered but hopefully they will and less fish will be harmed - would really worry me if these threads were hidden away

i have 2" per gallon stocking on some of my tanks maybe pushing 3" per gallon - but wouldnt recommend that to a newbie

one thing that i have found is that the inch per gallon rule will not work-

firstly a 2 inch tetra is approximately 8 times bigger in biomass than a 1 inch tetra of the same body shape...there is a big debate at PFK at the moment about their stocking calculator.

IMO stocking isnt about rules or guidelines- its about common sense and knowledge of your fishes eating habbits

B has its dimensions doubled compared to A A and B has an area 4 times bigger than A this only shows 2 dimensions, the 3rd dimension would double it further making B 8 times bigger than A

this comparison can only be made when the 1 inch tetra is the same shape as the 2 inch tetra

EDIT that drawing states that is 2 times bigger when it should say 4

The point was not that doubling the dimensions increases a similar 3d shapes volume by 8, but that fish aren't perfect 3d shapes, don't grow in the same proportion and an increase in volume by 8 doesn't nessecarily mean an increase in waste output by 8. It's a lot more complex than that.

yeah your right but in generall all rules do not work...it just takes good common sense and knowledge

I have a huge problem with the 1" per gallon rule. A big difference is with fish that are predators. Their tank waste is much much greater than the standard guppy, molly, tetra.

The point is, it's a handy guideline for newbies who are only keeping said tetras, guppies and such. Generally for small community fish it means the tank will be understocked (well, have less fish than it could hold), which certainly isn't a bad thing.
