Stocking Rule?

Marine people are smarter than freshwater people, we marine people know that there is no rule :). Not even a beginner should be able to use a "rule" and we should never mention it ever again :). I love mariners, they seem smarter.....

There's no rule in FW either, just a guide to prevent people from stocking their tanks in such a way that requires dilligent maintenance.

Looks can be very deceiving ;)

I find many of the salty people on this forum somewhat less than smart. Look how quick most are to bash anyone not using LR or wanting to add a cannister filter. Many scream "nitrate factory" purely because they read it somewhere.

eh, well i find the saltwater people, even experianced ones, are able to learn and accept that they are wrong or whatever and change their thoughts. Freshwater people, not really.....

I hear lots of freshwater people talk about the IPG "rule/guideline", and say its ok for beginners to use it since they dont know any better, but never heard a marine person say that....

I think you will find that there are people who fit both descriptions in each group. If most FW people were not able to learn and accept failings, surely the entirety of the top part of the forum would come to a halt as no one feels they need advice and everyone thinks they are perfect.

Also, Steelhealr is a FW fish keeper, as am I and many others. Is it only "pure-blood" marine keepers that are able to learn, or can people who keep both styles of tanks learn (maybe those that keep both can only learn a little)?

I can't help but detect some prejudice in your view. There are a huge number of FW people that are prepared to learn. Look at the driving forces behind the science forum to allow everyone to overcome myths and word of mouth, mostly they are FW keepers.

Can you not see how precarious your sweeping generalisation is?

ok master, i see what you are saying, i shall listen to you and bow down at your feet :)

No not pure blood marines but some people who only do freshwater. Yes i am being quite generalized but as a majority....

i spend some time in the freshwater section since i too have a 75 gallon freshwater planted tank, and i get pretty POed when someone says T5 and PC are the same, just on is bent (T5's with individual reflectors will be better than PC's since it wont waste as much light) and how other people who just generally dont listen. Could be my fault since i have a habit of involving myself in arguments so maybe i am attracted to posts where someone doesnt listen and/or doesnt believe what someone else says even though that someone else was right.

You understand what im saying?

Yes, and exactly the same happens in the marine section. Someone once posted a pic of their SW tank, it had gravel and fake green plants and a shipwreck. He was flamed like it was a titanium refinery for not having LR and for not aiming for a slice of reef.

I personally don't think most people in FW refuse to learn. I think too many people state their views as facts without any evidence to back them up, but the same often happens in SW.

i see what your saying, your right i know, i guess its just that i join more arguments in the freshwater section than i do here, maybe its me and not other members, your right....

I think that statement has summed up the past few months on this forum which is sad really because this is usualy a friendly and helpful website where we should all try to embrace others ideas without belittling them and harassing them and to actually take their views onboard even if we disagree sometimes.

Anyway thats a whole different story. See also the thing with marines is that IME marine fish seem to be more complex than most freshwater fish that hobbiest deal with; as in they have high teritorial needs, they need lots of room, personalities can vary greatly from fish of the same species and also more fish have greater diet requirements. Also if you think of 6 categories of fish : small, slow, fast, territorial, large and fussy this should also help you make good combinations i.e you dont want to put a fast large fish in a small tank or put a fussy fish in a tank with territorial fish.
Hope thats of some help ;)
