As I learn more on here, our plans for our tank continue to evolve and change. After starting with a 20 Gallon we were offered (and accepted) a 37 Gallon. Been trying to decide how to best cycle the new tank as the filter in the 20 Gal is too small, and media is too small for the new filter as well. Finally decided to set it up temp by my desk on my dog grooming table and do a fishless cycle and then drain the water in the 20 and 37 and swap them.

So we have some more time before adding any fish, but here is what we would like to put in it (keep in mind we means my 8 year old son with some guidance from dad - but he is very interested in keeping his fish happy rather then just having what he wants)

The tank is 30"L x 13"D by 24"W. We currently have 6 Kyathite Danio in the 20 Gal so they will need to move over. He also wants some Cory Cats so we are going to go with a sand substrate, and will plan on having 6 of them, type to be determined. He would also like to have 2 angel fish and then is undecided on a few sword tails or some guppies instead. Would that combo work, and if so what quantities would you suggest? Would his tank be maxed out or have room for more? Do you suggest any other fish?

Thanks for your input, like I said we have some time but want to use it to properly plan out where we are going.

Danios require cooler water than the angels, so that would not work. You could probably manage with the guppies or the swords, though guppies can be a pain. Be careful where you buy them, if you do, because they can be sensitive.

I would stock something like this:
10x danio
6x corydoras
1x male swordtail

OR

10x danio
15x dwarf corydoras (c. hastatus)
1x male swordtail

You could also swap the swordtail for a handful of those guppies (oh I hate guppies).

You would have to be careful about keeping temperature between 71-75 (22-24) degrees. Also, this is sort of pushing the stocking a bit, but I believe that the danios would do much better in a larger group.

Here's a link to the danio, with good information.... http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/danio-kyathit/
I would set it up as an unheated tank. Saves you money on a heater, unless the room gets super cold in the winter. Then I'd add a heater and set at about 65-70° for the winter.
Add your choice of cory cat, 90% seem to like cool water, some hill stream loaches, and a half dozen male guppies or so and call it good.

So what would be good tank mates to an angel fish? He would really like to have angelfish so we may just keep the 20 gal as well as the 37, leave the danio in the 20 and put an angelfish or 2 in the 37. If we go that route I think I can stock the 20 from the suggestions above, but what would you suggest to go with the angel fish?

What are the dimensions of your 37g tank, OP?
