Im preparing a fluval 4ft and wanted some ideas on fishys that are happier in water with a p.h. of 7.8 ???

Im looking at achieving a natural looking planted community that has something a bit different and unusual when it comes to the fish.

Any ideas plz ???

I was going to mention a Pictus Catfish but your pH is a bit high for them. What kind of fish do you like?

Most "community tanks" do best with an equal amount of bottom dwellers, top dwellers & some mid level schooling fish. With the large size of your tank you can easily keep a large shoal of pretty much any Tetra you want. It's always best to pick fish that fit your tap water parameters so you're starting out the right way :good:

If you have a sand substrate instead of gravel you could do a nice group of Corydoras Catfish, maybe even a couple of types. They should be in groups of at least 6 to 10. They're very active fish that look comical when they buzz up & down the sides of the tank. Very peaceful too.

Glass Catfish are very unusual looking fish that get to be about 4 inches long each & they look absolutely amazing in a large shoal of 10-12. They also like a very planted tank so that works with your plan.

I would do a pair of scarlet angels and a school of 20 rummy nose tetras (as they are larger than neons and less likely to be eaten by the angels). And a school of 6 Cory cats. You could also do a rainbow fish community.

A school of Rainbows would look great too................. :good:

Rainbows?

Substrate will be a sand and fine black gravel mix, i really like the diamond tetras and ive seen glass catfish but never thought they would survive in the water i have.
ill look up the scarlet angels ive never seen them before.
My lfs has butterfly fish and has had them in for years can i only keep 1 of these or is that just a bad idea anyway?

Sorry, I don't know anything about those except the Glass Cats. Some sites claim that Glass Cats are okay with the higher pH that you have but they really don't handle fluctuations in the pH too well. Keeping the pH constant is more important than keeping it low. You can naturally lower your pH with driftwood, Bogwood or mopani root.

the tank i have is 7.8ph and that has bogwood in it allready so im guessing it will be that for the new tank (im upgrading).

I dont really wanna start messing with the ph.

the butterfly fish in the store is a dull brown mottled thing around 4-5 inches it just hangs on the surface like a hatchett fish.

Fast fish or slow fish?

Either an Asian bio-tope or a rainbow community, I'm thinking…

you would need to elaborate on both asian bio-tope and rainbow plz

the tank will be filterd by a fluval external and a fluval u4 internal to provide flow and oxygen

A calm water/ calm behaviour African setup?

Upto 3 African Butterfly Fish
1, 3 or 4 Leopard Bushfish
9 Congo Tetras (3 males)
6 Rift Valley Synondontis of one species (eg. petricola; lucipinnis; multipunctatus)

What are the other two dimensions of the tank?

Asian bio-tope(ish):
* 15-20 danios of one species (up to two inches long), I'm thinking maybe a Barilius sp. or Danio choprae
* 10+ loaches of one species (number depends on size, maximum length of 4-5") or maybe Garra flavatra
* some gouramis of one species (what do you like to see when you look at fish? maybe 1m 2f lace gouramis)

Rainbow community:
* 50+ dwarf (1") rainbows of 1-2 species or 15 dwarf neon (2") rainbows or 10 large (4") rainbow
* 10+ loaches of one species (number depends on size), maybe 20 khulis?

Ah, that's a nice tank :good: In terms of total stock, you should be able to have quite a bit more fish than I suggested in the long term. Out of the species that we have named, are there any that you particularly like the look of? Are you looking for many species or a few? What decor would you like to use?

thanks for the replys guys just got around to reading them ive had a good dose of the man flu. Managed to pull myself together though and just did my weekley water change.

Im looking to use a dark shaded 3d background, fine black gravel and playsand substrate, Decor will de drift or bogwood, a couple of large stones, home made grey slate caves and Live plants. I dont know what plants yet i gotta do some research as i wont be using co2 just ferts.

3d background is a maybe.

Maybe if the price is right the best i can find is around £120.
