Thanks for the tip, I finally managed to do it.

This thread is full of good info :good:
I just dont like the look of danio, i couldnt keep them in my tank either, im a 2 ft tank....they like length.....

A quick note on adding new fish. I most often find if the filter is fairly mature and steady that you can add a few fish (small shoal) all together without any real problems, no real need to be adding 1 shoaling fish a week or something like that. Of course this does depend on the filter being mature and stable as i said.

Wow! thats pretty bright!!

I know - I said it was set up for my 3 year old - but I still take looking after them seriously. So going back to the size of the gravel. Do you guys reckon this gravel is to big for loaches and cories?

I think I will be on the cautious side - my tank is still pretty new and just getting to the point of stabilising it. I will go for 4 or less next time and leave the ones that needs to be in a shoal to last.

i was the same, as my tank was newly cycled i didnt add more than 3 at a time.....they say never add more than 50% of your stock, in other words, never double your fish stock in one go :good: i now have 8 fish and im still only adding 2 this weekend....your tank looks ace for a 3 year old mine has a sunken pirate ship for my 1 and 3 year old.. haha :)

hehe, my nearly 3 year old picked a nemo ornament for ours, and the nearly 2 year old picked polar bears... the things we do to keep kids happy lol :)

tell me about it :)

So what do you reckon on the substrate? Is it too rough for loaches/cories?

what kinda size is the gravel (2mm? 4mm?)? are there sharp edges or is it rounded?

I attached the picture further up - they are around 3-4 mm and rounded - one of the ornaments are a bit sharpish but I can always take that out.

long as there are no sharp edges on the gravel cories should do fine, they would prefer sand, but plenty of people keep them quite happily in rounded gravel :)

oh, cool!! great news! I can have them back on my list then :)

Is there no way you could cap it with a shallow layer of sand? My corys used to be on sand, and would love burying their heads in as far as they could. They're now temporarily on smooth gravel, and they definitely can't route about as much as they like to.

Like pouring a bit of send over the top of the gravel? Can do I guess. How deep should it be? Can the gravel show through a bit - I assume I don't need to completely cover it.

But the sand would slowly mix up with the gravel (especially in water changes) and just end up looking a bit of a mess.
