Hi. are stingrays oddballs? are they hard to keep and what sizes do they reach any small ones???

sting rays are oddballs. they needa mature tank of at least 6 months and the smallest ones can grow to have a disc of 12" (10" is more comon though). The are quite difficult to keep, as they need perfect water quality.

ste :)

o right i have had my tank for over a year the water is good jst i only have a 30 gal tank im guessing this isnt enough

not really, you could use it to grow them on but you want to be looking at a80gallon+ minimum

ste :)

Just out of interest, are stingrays socail animals and can they live in the company of other simiarly sized bottom dwellers.

  No not quite, do they like the company of their own kind, are they gregasious.

Thanks for the site, I will check it out.

they are sociable and are often kept with discus. as long as there tank mates arn't agressive as if the ray feels threatened, then it will thrust its tail over and can give quite a nasty sting to tank mates or owner. obviously I wouldn't recamend keeping them with small snacksized fish such as neons and these will end up as a ight snack here and there. I kept mine with geophagus and knife fish

Ok thanks, after seeing various pics in the members pics section I have become more interested and wondered weather I could possible keep them. Keeping them with Discus would be a good idea for me, maybe one day I will explore more in depth and get some.

Thanks

I cannot keep freshwater stingrays as the time I have to keep the nitrates at 0 would be a little difficult. However there is a nice alternative, that I plan to start in the future. Saltwater stingrays. They can take extreme conditions and don't need much care at all - Once you got the bills set out! But I plan to buy a $2000 Sump filter/skimmer and getting sea water from the ocean to keep some Fiddler Rays (And they don't even sting!) and Shovelnose Rays, and maybe even a wobbygong (always wanted one of those) and put them in a small pool , then start something like a mini-ocean for them. Although the money is an issue, the care is no where near as high as caring for freshwater stingrays. And those rays are native to Australia so I can just fish them out for free! :D

Eelzor is that Legal??

I have always wanted stingrays but i don't have enouth money to buy and care for them (also my mum says NO MORE TANKS) unless i put one in my oddball tank, would this work?
