Has anyone kept a stingray?
What are the requirements?
...And, is it ethical to keep something that can get so large n a home aquarium?

I seen some in the bow front style tanks quite a few years ago. I was very interested in setting up for one. But, I don't see them in the shops now. Is this like the 70's when people kept tortoise's with no know-how?

No Steve Irwin jokes please.

From what I've seen on the internet, they avarage out at 18 inches in diameter. Mine is a 66 UK gallon. I wouldn't dream of confining an 18" fish in there.
However, Maybe there are smaller species?

I heard the sting rays get quite big. So anything over 50 gallons imo.

I think if you dont have a clue then dont comment. The smallest of ray species i.e scobina and hystrix could be kept in a 6x2x2 minimum but in the UK I will gaurantee that you will not find true hystrix and scobina. There fore you could go with some of the other smaller speices which reach between 16-18" like laticeps, orbignyi, yepezi or Itaituba (p14) these will require an absolute minimum of 60x30x24 but would be better with a bit more length ie 72x30x24. Rays are not particually hard to keep you just have to be commited you have to filter the tank very strongly I do 2x 25% water changes a week. The best rays to gain ray experience with are Motoro but these do get big females can get to a 24" disk with males being smaller at the moment I have 4 rays a pair of motoro, a female peruvian motoro, and a yepezi. I hope this helps you out a bit if you have any more questions just ask.

Thank you kindly, guys. The tank requirements are just to big for me to persue this any further. I simply haven't the room for tank's that size. Shame though, they are beautiful creatures.

Cant the dwarf red retics be kept in a 50g Richard go ask wharf.

them red retics stay so small no one has ever found them before they are so small you even need to chop blood worm up

What are these red retics then? I've never even heard of them :shifty:

Wharf aquatics have basically made up a species of ray to try and make money on retics and on another forum started getting heated and threatening legal action etc etc so I just thought it was funny.

 sounds like another good reason not to ever visit wharf then, i've heard that they are stupidly over priced and have a very elitist attitude that basicly says if you cant afford our prices then you shouldnt be keeping those kinds of fish which had already put me off.

Yeah they think there the nuts because of the relationship they have with PFK. I wont be going there wouldnt mind taking a look at pier though.

the 1st week they got them they were called red retics

the 2nd week they had them they were called dwarf retics that are a perfect ray for a small tank

they were chargeing £120 for them because they had big claspers so they must stay small

Ive heard good things about Pier Aquatics, not far from me either. Their recent stock allways seems to have some interesting barbs and channas on it, might have to take a look.
