Hi, I am looking at various tanks/set ups etc and weighing up options......
Does anyone have a Stingray filter in there tank?
What is in them? Is it sponge or a cartridge, I think what I am trying to find out is are they any good and is there room to change any media? i.e. some ceramic noodles, coral gravel then sponge and maybe a small portion of floss?
Any ideas , info greatly appreciated :good:

Hi,they have a sponge filter at the bottom(tail) then 2 small cartridges with carbon and zeolite in. IMO they are crap they dont have enough media in or room to add more. Id go for something miles better like a Eheim aquaball or Fluval u series, personally id go for the aquaball it has more options regarding media. Or a better option would be a External filter.

Thought as much, been dropping hints for ages about a second smaller tank, weighing up the options was going for one of the small "Elite" range but they come with the stingray filter
Don't want to spend any more by purchasing "extras"

I'm using the Stingray 5 in my 5 gallon betta tank. I threw out the cartridges and stuffed it with foam. Once you take out the Carbon/Zeolite cartridges, there is a reasonable amount of body space to fill with whatever you'd like if you're creative in how you do it. The inside of mine is completely stuffed with foam just so that there was something inside it.

I think it all depends on how much "stuff" you plan to shove in it. But if you're creative, it could work.

This thread mirrors what I've seen about Stingrays in the beginners section. We've had 2 or 3 members just give up on Stingrays and get other filters, after which they each posted that they were shocked by how much better their new filters were. On the other hand we've had several who have modified their filters, like Channti, and have been ok with them. In each case I believe they replaced any zeolite/carbon with more open-cell sponge.
