i know its not a good filter but has anyone tried to improve it.im thinking theres a heck of a lot of space inside the body with not much in it was going to fill it with either gravel or bio media so ive got the two sponges at the bottom and a load of collonized gravel surely this would improve it

i ran one of these for about a month and filled that middle bit with a poly pad and to be fair it did polish the water. I wouldn't put gravel in it just incase it cuts the flow off completely.

I used to have one and really didnt like it at all, the best thing I did was replace it with a fluval 2+ filter, they cost next to nothing and well worth the investment :good:

I use these in my betta tanks... taking out the stupid cartridges as they are useless and take up valuable space. I use the Elite Mini sponges to fill up the sides and it works brill for me

I'm using one in a 5 gallon betta tank. The stupid cartridges have been thrown out, and I've cut chunks of filter foam to fit the inside of it. I've been running the tank since September 2009, cleaning the filter once a month. It seems to work fairly well for me. Pulls a lot of crud out of the water, and then its just a case of cracking open the filter once a month, squeezing the sponges in some PWC water, shoving them back into place, and dropping it back in the tank. The current on it is fine for my betta if it's aimed at the surface. My only complaint is that the "tail" of the stingray gets crudded-up very quickly in a heavy-bio-load tank (I ran the filter for two weeks in an already-over-filtered guppy tank and had to clean the "tail" every other day).

EDIT: Just realized this was a Stingray 15. Figured I'd put in that I'm using the Stingray 5

if this is the largest of the pumps, then im using one for my tank and I think it does the job well! My chemical levels are always low, and the only time my tank ever looks a bit dirty is when im replacing some of the sand after a good hoover up, but normally it doesnt take too long to clear

Although when I do replce the sand I do have to clean the filter more, but once its clear, then its only a clean every 3 days, which I dont mind doing as thats when I always clean my sand up

The Elite stingray 15 does a good job, i use it in my 16 gallon tank, and i use a more powerful filter in my 120 gallon community tank and i gotta say theres not much difference, i would recommend it, its a briliant filter.
