A little history first...
When I bought my betta he came to me with his fins already torn up (my avatar is the day I got him). As his fins were growing he kept getting sticky fins (despite perfect water stats and a good diet). I am sort of wondering if it was because his fins were growing in separate portions rather than as one piece and were curling making him prone to them becoming sticky.
Then, finally he grew them to a point where there weren't any bits sticking out and he stopped getting sticky fins for awhile...
Well... come one day I looked at him and his fins were all ripped all over again. My initial thoughts were that it had to be the filter, but I eventually caught him flicking (never could figure out why but he stopped after a day). So... along passes not much time and he had a small bouts of sticky fins. I treated him... and now about a week later... more sticky fins so I've started treating AGAIN!
It isn't an emergency as treating him works to get rid of it.... BUT... I want to know if there is a way to stop this from happening while his fins are growing back again? There is nothing wrong with the water stats, I have the appropriate 0's and 10 for nitrates, pH is at 6.5, temperature is 80F, I change 50% of the water weekly, he is in a 10 gallon tank with real plants. He is very active and enthusiastic about life.
But.. how can I prevent the sticky fins?
