I have a piece of wood, stick whatever you want to call it, from my leopard gecko cage that is just sitting on my shelf because there is no room in the cage. I bought it at petco and it is real wood. I was wondering if I bleach cleaned it, whether it could be harmful to my fish or not? any suggestion is helpful. Thanks

I don't no if it will be any good, boil it alot of times as the urine of the lizard will want removing.

It depends what kind of wood it is. If its completely bone dried out, and it doesnt give any smell off when you cut it- and you boil it- a lot, you ought to be alright. Could you describe this piece of wood more accurately?

When I first started looking for driftwood early this year and was still very new to fishkeeping, I was told my 2 Petsmart employees (2 different stores and take it for what it is worth but at least one of the stores I have come to trust very much) that you shouldn't use it in aquariums. I don't remember the reason why though. It seems like the wood was from a grape vine or something like that but not sure. I do remember reading a couple different places that you shouldn't use wood from evergreen trees. Don't remember the reason for that either though. That's what happens when you get old.

That is what is was exactly...old and boned out. It didn't smell or anything, so I boiled it a couple times. I noticed after I boiled it the first time the water was a dark brown, most likely from the bark I used to have for my gecko. The second time I boiled it however, there was no residue left over, and it was fine. I rinsed it for 2-3 hours and then I put it in. I had to put a large rock on one side to keep it weighed down because it isn't waterlogged yet, but soon will be hopefully. I had just replaced the substrate in my tank about a week ago, so the water is nice and clean. It still is so I'm guessing the log isn't going to leak out any tea like water. Thanks for the help by the way!

my only real concern is if the wood is still "green" and not compleately dried out
it could release sugars and starches as it sits in the water. this will have a detrimental effect on the inhabitants of the tank.
