Can sterlets be feed on normal tetra wheatgerm sticks or do they need to be fed on something different

I only feed wheatgerm in the winter, in the summer I feed high protein food sticks and another food stick as well as tons of sinking pellets and Bloodworm cubes for the Sterlet. :)

do sterlets prefer to eat sinking or floating food?

They are more likely to get hold of the sinking pellets without other fish grabing them on the way down, they are designed for bottom dwellers. But IME Sterlets aren't fussy and after a while will come to the surface and eat pond sticks etc.

NEVER,NEVER,NEVER

let sterlets or sturgeon eat from the surface.....

sure its funny to watch but they can swallow pockets of air and this can kill them
i was told this by a sturgeon expert

sinking pellets allways

macky :D

Well Macky I was told this also. So I have been feeding various sinking foods which up until a while ago stopped him from eating from the surface but now with ever growing confidence he always comes up to eat from the surface, and my question to you is how to stop a 35" fish in the middle of a pond so I can't even reach him from doing want the hell he wants! I have splashed around and all that but he has got to the stage were he just ignores me. :/

if i am keeping two breeds together koi and sterlets how can i stop the sterlets eating the sticks for the koi -_-

Well here is what I tried out today and it was sucessful. I lowered a plank of wood across the pond with the Sterlets and a few Koi in one end and the majority of the Koi in the other, I feed the Sterlets end sinking pellets and the Koi end floating sticks etc, I then lifted it up and tried again so all the Koi got feeds on both side. It took a while so I am looking to modify it to make it quicker but at least it worked.
