Is this actually possible ? you know "sterilizing" all your plants to remove all traces of algae so algae will never grow ?!!!?i you know like dipping everthing in a little bleach etc etc.. i find it hard to believe .... :(

Algae is transported into the water column via all sorts of ways, not just on plants i.e. spores in tap water. Algae is also very adaptable and hardy so will take hold pretty much anywhere if conditions allow.

As you already probably know, algae biggest enemy is healthy, growing plants - a result of an idea balance of light and nutrients.

yeah thats what im thinking now... so i guess making sure that algae wont get into the tank is pretty impossible and therefore a waste of time....
For example, a good way to treat an algae infested err.. anubias plant is to place it in bleach to kill of the algae... but what i do is i place the algae infested plant into my main tank(balanced vs algae) and allow the algae to die away... then replace the anubias plant into my smaller tanks (which are yet to be balance against algae).. but we ofter read around that doing this is bad because of the risk of contaminating the other tank with algae..... just my thoughts... random rantings :D

For your interest Kenneth, I have good results against the common green spot/mat algae that occurs on slower groing plants i.e Anubias, Java fern, Sagittaria by dosing more KH2PO4 to a minimum of 1.5ppm PO4.

interesting im having problems with the green spot right now actually ! right now im only dosing traces and kn03 because i cant find an alternative to kh2p04, still thinking of having it shipped from the USA via greg watson ! are there easier alternatives to the powder form kh2po4 ? i think the only thing lacking in my tanks might be phosphates..... and the problem is i cant find a tester for phosphates around here !??!?! :look:
*just read.. there is no commercially available tester for K..... o well might be worth the risk having it shipped !

*edit 2 is KH2P04 considered an illegal substance to have shipped ? ihead kn03 is...

I know zig uses Fleet Enema as a phosphate source. It is commonly available in most chemists (drug stores), not sure about oz though.

I bet it is available, its really cheap as well, try your drugstore.

The Enema contains 131 mg/ml of PO4.

Working out the dosage is easy: for example my tank is 160 litres and i want 1ppm PO4 from the Fleet enema

So 131/160 = 0.81ppm PO4 from each ml of Fleet
