Hey guys,

2 of my 6 sterbai cories seem to be more active than usual.

I cant tell the sex so I dont know what ratio of male to female I have.

basically one of them is following another about alot, almost sticking on top of it. One of them seems to be wriggling about occasionally on plant leaves, either sidewards or upside down.

I've done abit of research and it could possibly be breeding behaviour, but I'm not sure as I also read its difficult to get them to breed. Anything else it could be?

I've been feeding fozen bloodworm and brine shrimp for about 2 or 3 weeks (on occasion) now, and apart from that, nothing is new.

Tank Stats
tank is 125L
set up for over a year
live plants.
external filter (680 LPH) + internal filter (300 LPH) (cleaned in tank water)
liquid fert added for plants for 2 or 3 weeks.
20-25% water changes (plus dechlor) every 7-10 days

stocking

10 scissortail rasboras
6 sterbai cories
1 pearl gourami (female)
4 zebra danios

I havent done a water test, but I feed lightly (once a day for 5/6 days) ammonia/nitrite always 0ppm, nitrate hovers around 40ppm (hard to tell with API kit)

No other 'weird' behaviour from any of the other fish.

Its sounds like breeding behavour.
Females are more plumpy than males and abig bigger in size. Some do turn upside down when breeding.

The corys that goes upside down does he look bloated.
How does his barbals look.
Any sores on his body.

Have you also posted this thread in the cory section of the forum.

Hi gaz gun man :)

Here's a link that will show you what corys look like when they are spawning. Notice that after mating, the female will be carrying eggs in a pouch she makes by holding her ventral fins together.

thanks for the video, seems like I was right, as one of them has their ventral fins together asif it was one fin. didnt mention it in the original message as I wasnt sure what they were called.

What are the chances of having baby cories? any of the other fish likely to eat eggs/fry? should I do daily water changes to help with possible growth?

hi wilder :)

one of them does look alittle bigger but i cant be sure.

upside down cory dosent look any different, but again its hard to tell.
they all look healthy. no wounds or missing barbels.

I reckon its breeding behaviour but its better to be safe than sorry huh!

Hi gaz gun man :)

C. sterbai are not the easiest corys to tell apart because they are chunky little fish. If you look at them from above, you might be able to see the more rounded appearance of the female. Are they mature fish?

Let me direct you to this article. It will give you some idea of what to expect. Then, be sure to come back here and ask questions. :D

Hi gaz gun man :)

I took a picture of mine in the hope I might be able to help you, but it's still hard to tell at the angle to of them are at. If you look at the fish on the center, right, you can see how the female shape is fuller than the male on the bottom. Hope this helps.

thanks inchworm :)

yeah they're mature fish - they were roughly an inch when I got them and they're abit bigger now - plus a year older.

as you say - hard to tell sex, i'll try to get some top shots later today but I dont know how easy it'll be
