Well I signed up a few days ago, too ask a question for my sister. And now I got the Itch too get back into the fish hobbie I once had.

A few years back,I cared for discus in my 115gallon, and kept a 55gal marine. Sold most all my equipment when i got out of the hobbie. All that remains is a 115gallon aqaurium and two 55gallon aqauriums. a few heaters and other items.

Im living on the third level of an apartment, So the 115gallon is a definate NO(dissapointed). I would think the floor should hold a 55gallon without problems(I hope)..

I love the look of reefs, but am just going too stick with a fowlr setup for the time being.

I,ve Priced out some equipment, that I will be ordering In about 3/5 weeks.

here is the list.

1. Elos tests for, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, PH , Phosphate.
2. Hagen optima air pump
3.(2)250watt jager aqaurium heaters.
4. pentair digital alert thermometer
5. red sea wave master pro/ maxijet powerhead package, Includes,(1)maxi 600,(2)maxi 900,(1) Maxi 1200
6. salinty refractometer
7. tunze nano doc protein skimmer 9002

Ill just start this therad off by asking. Am I forgetting any equipment? Do you guys want too add anything.

Thanks

:hi: and welcome back to the salty side of life - hope that was an itch you said and not ich

Good size never the less

Go for salifert

2. Hagen optima air pump

Nah - you are going to need 2 x powerhead that will turn over at least x 20 - look for koralia or maybe tunze

3.(2)250watt jager aqaurium heaters.

yep, go for a non glass one

4. pentair digital alert thermometer

ok
5. red sea wave master pro/ maxijet powerhead package, Includes,(1)maxi 600,(2)maxi 900,(1) Maxi 1200

ok, you wont need the powerheads i suggested

6. salinty refractometer

:good:

7. tunze nano doc protein skimmer 9002

good choice or maybe the Deltec mce

Algae magnet, syphon, salt, bucket to mix salty stuff, extra heater (you will have a spare powerhead), phospate remover, what lights you got?
Thanks

+Thank you for the reply and the welcome. And yes it was an Itch not ich, LOL.

Im ordering my equipment Online And didnt notice salifert tests, Ill have another look. I wish I could afford too get the tunze Powerheads, Had them before, should of never sold them, Maxi Jets will have too do for now. I was Looking at the deltec skimmers, They are a little out of my price range right now. I only have $1000 for equipment right now, and what I listed is up too around $750.

I Have a syphon and a large plastic garbage cann for mixing salt, should have a few extra heaters laying around.

So I should have a few hundred dollars left over for salt, and a few chunks of Liverock,, darn I just remembered I need a stand for my 55. Theres another couple hundred added in too the cost, and no filter, But is it really needed with LR?

You asked what Lights I have, I wasnt really thinking of lighting, Was just going too pick up a few marine flourecents and use them in the hood the 55comes with. Is this efficent enough? Or is good lights needed for the LR.

And im also thinking of adding a 20 or 30 gal sump, using this overflow with a mag 5 pump, which has an output of 310gph at 4ft. but that wont be for a good month or so after I get everything setup.

Edit* Guess I should probably get an RO unit, Dont want too get all this stuff, then have sick fish because of bad water qaulity. what do you guys think?

Edit* Ok so If i need 20x turnover rate in the marine tank, I need 4000liter flow in a 55gallon, 200liter x 20 = 4000liter per hour, The powerheads I got listed only have a combined output of 900gph which is about 3700 liter, and once I add the sump with 300gph that should bump me up too about 4500liter per hour turnover, Which should be efficent. Do I have this right?

Umm thats all I can think of for now, Anything else you guys can add, Or does this project look too be on the right track for now.

Thanks

After doing some searching around on the internet, I came across a used saltwater setup, comes with everything. The only thing im worried about is, how much weight can the apartment floor hold. Its a 65gallon with a 30gallon sump so a total of 95gallons which weighs about 790lbs when filled with water, add in tank weight plus stand live rock, sand. Probably close too 900lbs give or take some.

What do you guys think, can a third level apartment hold the weight?

That works out just under 410kg so including stand and tank it's going to be 550-600kg.
Get 7-8 of your mates to stand on the spot you want to put the tank and jump up and down, if they don't fall through the floor your good to go :)

on a serious note as long as the weight is correctly placed it should be fine, put your tank near load bearing walls or over known supportive beams.
Avoid the centre of rooms or near taps, toilet etc as water from bathroom leaks can cause structural problems.
I've not heard many stories of fish tanks coming through ceilings :)
