I have recently met a breeder of these and must admit i have totally fallen in love with them. Just wondered how much they go for in the shops and if they could be kept with normal BN's or not?

Thanks.

Seriously? Where? I'm looking for these; I think I was recommended they'd probably sell for aout £20. Haven't found any for myself though

Which species are we on about?.... 182 (starlight) or 183 (white seam).... both get large 182 being the bigger at a potential 8-10 inches, 183 slightly smaller but still potentially 8 inches. 183 can be very aggressive especially males.... quite often reported to have killed fellow tank mates including there own species (My own group did this aswell and not just during breeding behaviour).

Price wise, young 1 inch around £10-£15, sub adults to adults range from £15- £35 round here when available but area to area will differ like all fish do.

I wouldn't recommend keeping with any other species of plec, also makes sure the tank is quite large and has plenty of hiding and territory places to call there own.

So £3-£4 each is a bargain then... :D. Haha. I believe they are just normal starlight plecs, no white edge on the fins or tail. I may get a group of 4 then.

Cheers.

The price above was based on 183's, 182 true starlights will be averaging that sort of price you've mentioned nowadays... i would say average price at £5 for young(ish) fish.

If the fish your buying are sub adult then yes a decent bargain, if juvenile 1-2 inch then it's pretty average tbh.

Yea sorry, my price was for L183s

The L183 Ancistrus dolichopterus is actualy the starlight, the L120/L182 Ancistrus sp has no white tipped fins.

Erm.... no it's not.... if you have old material which states it then that info has been updated quite a while back... L183 is called a white seam and L182 is classified as a starlight...... Don't believe everything you read in books lol :good:

Blimey I only just bought this book lol, its a December 2007 version, looks like I need a newer copy!

That's the problem, they can never decide and often change making a alot of literature wrong which is quite annoying :/

To be fair though, there are many that still refer to L183 as a starlight even though it is actually now named a white seam, in aus it's referred to as peppermint... you cant win lol.

LOL! Shame they're not the white seams then.

They were still very nice though.

Thanks for the info everybody :)

As long as Ingo Seidel calls L183, aka dolichopterus, a starlight, so will I.

Many others will do to... and there's nothing wrong with that... Heiko Bleher has previously referred to them as white seam lol... so i guess everybody will call them just what they want to.... whatever you decide to refer to them as, they are stunning plecs and that will never change :good:
