I added sand to my 120 gallon about 5 days ago. I added the water 4 days ago. It has been sitting in the 120 gallon for 4 days without a filter or pump as my boyfriend hasn't gotten the chance to go to the bank and pull out some money to buy 2 new filters for it. I was curious as to what the water smelled like (bad idea) so I opened up the top and took a whiff. It didn't smell that good. I mean it wasn't that bad where it would make me sick to my stomach, but it didn't smell good at all. It didn't smell like normal water.

So my question is, could my water go stagnant from not being circulated in 4 days? Does that mean I have to empty the tank by hand and fill it again?

There is nothing in the tank except water and sand. I will be picking up both filters tomorrow. If the water still smells after everything as filtered for awhile I will have to do a massive water change I assume.

Yea believe me...I know 120 gallons is a lot of water. I accidentally moved it to close to my wall for the filters to fit behind it and filled it up with water. After I realized how heavy 120 gallons of water was, I had to empty the tank by hand with a large bowl. It took me forever and my whole body hurt afterwards. The things I do for my fish. I want everything to be perfect for my soon to be baby oscar. :D He is going to be one spoiled little fish!

I have been strirring the sand everyday to release the air that is trapped in the sand. So maybe I am cirrculating the water a little by doing that? :dunno:

I would still do a partial change before adding fish, 50% if possible.
