Now that i have decided on getting a new larger tank (that being a 29) Im wondering what type of tank is better.

At Petsmart that have two different styles of 29 gals. One that is kinda like a square (my aunt has the same one and dimensions are about 30in long 20in high) The other one is a long rectangle one. Both being 29gallons.

Im just kinda curious which type of fish prefer which kind of tank. Im most likely getting the "squarish" one. All i really have room for!

The key points have been mentioned.

Tall tanks, (and even worse, hex tanks), have a relatively small surface area to volume ratio. If you have a lot of water movement, that is not a big problem, but then, the fish that tend to like tall tanks don't like a lot of water movement, so you tend to have to stock tall tanks lower.

Fish like barbs, teras, rasboras etc., like open swimming space so long shallow tanks are best for them.

So, what do you want to keep in it?

Im not sure what i am going to keep in it yet. There are so many bottom fish that i love! I could stock the whole thing is bottom/catfish fish. I know it wouldnt be smart and i wouldnt do it but i love all those kinds of fish!

Ill see how much room i have length wise, and accesories available for the different two tanks.

I dont want angles, or really any other cichlids (havent had good luck...)
How are Bala sharks in a 29gal?
If i was go get a pack of cories (3-5) and a red tailed shark too, How would they mix?

Kinda gettin off topic but im just tryin to figer out what i want to put in this new tank!

bala sjarks and red-tailed sharks are a no-no

cories would be great however.

A 29 gallon is big, but no that big. bala sharks require, I,d say, about 75-90 gallons of water and a black shark at least 50 gallons.

If you want active fish, then barbs or tetras would be great. Just get the kind that stay rather small.

A nice shoal of Rasboras or smaller tetras would be awesome!

Bala Sharks are shoaling fish, and grow too large for small tanks. RTBS are aggresive and territorial, espeacially aggressive against anything that looks even remotely like themselves. Cory's are fine.
