he was roaming the tank so I thought he was probably hungry, so I made a frozen (thawed obviously) mussel on string dance around in front of him and soon enough, he strikes! he scores! yay! He ate two dancing mussels and two dancing cockles! *very happy* he seemed to enjoy them as well.

Awsome! Soon you will have him eaten from your fingers, although probably not very safe! :p
keep using the string till he gets the idea of mussels etc being food and the eventually u wont need the string and he will know when and what he is bein fed! Goodluck!

does it matter if he ingests a little bit of the string? Once he's got the mussel I try to pull the string away but he's a strong lil fishy and when I pull the string he stays attached and comes up with it like I'm going fishing. He lets go eventually, I think it's only a little bit of string he's eating. It's normal white sewing string.

Yay for Spud!

I think that eating even a little string should be avoided. Is it possible you could use something organic like a piece of plant such as vallis?

Eating string would be no good.
Pearce the mussel and thread the string through it. Let him remove it, and dont actually tye it to the food.

I think this would be better.

just a question who is spud ???
He's my Suvattii puffer. I got him last week.

regarding the string... the vallis idea's a good one, won't he think that's a VERY strange fish though? - mussel with vallis sticking out of it's head? will try it and see. Yes, I've been tying the string, I didn't think of just threading it.

it looks like the string thing isn't going to be a problem! he's now taking it without string! yayyayayayyayayyyyy!!!!!!!! and he's pooed out the string he ate last time - all intact!
