My Rena XP3 external filter came with both a spray bar and jet nozzle outlet option for the tank.

What's peoples opinion on the best to fit?

I originally fitted the spray bar, but my LFS specialist told be the jet nozzle was better to provide more of a current and better circulation than a spray bar. I think he was right as the water does appear to circulate better with the jet.

I am now trying to go over to plants in my community tank with CO2 and wonder if it is better not to have such a good current? :S

If you are going planted, i would most definately fit the spray bar fitting :D

If you are going planted i would most definatly not fit the spray bar fitting as this gives alot of surface aggitation and alot of Co2 is lost from the water.

I have a spraybar fitted, and if you can find any surface agitation in my tank then I will give you £50. Its all about how its fitted, not about what you you have fitted. I have seen a lot of planted tanks with spraybars, mounted well below the water line, causing no surface agitation whatsoever. I have also seen planted tanks with a spraybar mounted vertically, rather than horizontally, again causing no problems. If you set up to make sure that the flow from the bar is low enough, it won't ever cause you any grief.

You want to go planted so aeration is not wanted, you can fit a spraybar to the bottom of the tank so the substrate is agitated and the mulm is kept in suspension for the filter to pick up.
Spraybars are better for surface agitation for maximum aeration ( if you wanted it :D )

sprey bar fitted under the water will not agitate the surface as much and so mean less o2 in the water and thusly better for your plants,
i fitted the jet nozzle to my filters and my plant growth has gone down alot since but with the hot weather sapping the o2 from the tank i thought it best i can grow my plants on better when the weather cools a bit, its got to be cheaper than buying new fish
