Spotted African Leaf Fish

The fish that is commonly sold as the 'Spotted African Leaf Fish' is actually not a leaf fish at all. It is Ctenopoma acutirostre, sometimes called the Leopard Ctenopoma or Leopard Bush Fish. They are an African anabantoid, distantly related to the Asian gouramis. They are generally ambush predators and have a large enough mouth to engulf other fish up to nearly half their own body size. Maximum length is about 6 inches or a bit more.

Here's a link to a profile that I wrote on this fish that might contain some useful information for you:

My experience of these fish (over about ten years) is that they are easy to keep, shy, hardy, peaceful, and very long lived (I gave mine away after 10 years!). Favourite food in aquaria is frozen bloodworm. Supplement with earthworms, river shrimps, brine shrimp, etc. No need for live feeder fish.

Don't keep them with aggressive tankmates (like cichlids) but you can mix them safely with large tetras, e.g., congo tetras. They need a planted aquarium if you want them to swim in the open. Floating plants are the idea (e.g. hornwort) supplemented with a few bushes of Java fern. Neither of these plants needs much light or any substrate, so life couldn't be easier.

Cheers,

Neale
