Hello,
1. If I have a 30 litre tank, do I go for a filter sized up? Example, if there is a choice between a 25l sponge filter and a 35 litre sponge filter, which one would you use for a 30l tank?
2. Any good sponge filter recommendations for a 29litre tank?
Thanks.

1)Usually I prefer a slightly bigger filter, the 35 liter filter.

2)You can get either a sponge filter or a hang on filter with flow rate of about 150-200 liter per hour.(about 5-6 times the volume of your tank).
Get a slower flow rate if you keep fish or shrimps that don't like fast flow rate.
Actually any brand of filter is ok.

I usually prefer a hang on filter as I don't need to put my hands inside the tank or water whenever I clean/maintain the filter.

I also don't like the tubing that is connected to the sponge filter. It requires cleaning every now and then.
It will have sticky stuff sticking to the outside of tubing making it look awful.

Nevertheless, sponge filter is still the filter which require the least maintenance.

By the way, if you are keeping shrimps with hang on filter, you must use a strainer sponge or a fine nets to cover the filter intake. This is to prevent the shrimplets from being sucked into the filter.

I usually try to size up. For example, I have a filter rates for 25 gallons in my 20g long, and I have a filter rated for 35 gallons on my 29g tank.

Why did you decide on a sponge filter?

There are small internal filters with adjustable flow suitable for bettas, but I would avoid those which have only carbon cartridges for media.
