If i have a sponge filter connected up to an airpump is it necessary for an airstone? does the airstone just create bubbles?
With a filter you dont need an air pump,(air pump running a filter counts as a filter) there just used for decoration, or people think that there fish needs air bubbles, If there air bubbles hit the surface and cause big bubbles then that can effect plants by releasing the carbon dioxide they need.caterpillar5 said:If i have a sponge filter connected up to an airpump is it necessary for an airstone? does the airstone just create bubbles?
No you dont need an airstone within the sponge filter. The bubbles create the suction to pull water thro the sponge.caterpillar5 said:that was my question... i was asking if a sponge filter needed an airstone or not? ive heard all u can do is just attached the air tubing straight to the sponge filter with no airstone.
I could be wrong, but I read a while back that it helps to have air stone in the sponge filter. Am I making a wrong assumption?Dubby said:No you dont need an airstone within the sponge filter. Logic says that bigger the bubbles, more the suction. Please also see this link for DIY sponge filter construction and he mentions that he does not use airstones.yhbae said:I could be wrong, but I read a while back that it helps to have air stone in the sponge filter. I guess you drilled a small hole and squized in an airstone/tube into the sponge?nutter said:I use a air stone in the middle to pull water through the spunge, otherwise it wont work, i have 2 homemade ones in my discus tank
