Sponge filter question

If this sounds stupid I’m sorry but is it ok to have the sponges on this filter pointing downwards ? You can move them around and was thinking it may help the uplift and be more efficient like this rather than having the sponges next to the pipe .

You can have them any way you like. It won't be more efficient as the water has to be pulled up against gravity but tbh its unlikely to make much difference. Too close to the sand and there is a risk that sand gets sucked up but you can see if this is happening.

Easy to test. Raise it up so the outlet is just above water and see how much water comes out. Now flip up the sponges and see it there's much difference.

I'm gonna set up the sponge filter like this. which type of sponge filter are you using? Does it work well?
