got a 10 g US with a partition. Right now there's just a betta in one half, but I'm planning on making 4 partitions - 2 for bettas, 1 for killis, and the last for either more killis or killi fry. Would a sponge filter on one section be ok for both killi sections? I wasn't sure whether or not the partition would mess with the filter's effectiveness.

As long as the partition is screened to allow water flow between them, which they should be, then it doesn't matter where you put the filter.

All that the sponge filter does is biological filtration, so if the water circulates it should be fine.

Cool thanks. Just got a Lee's sponge filter. It was cheap, so I figured I'd give it a try. Also noticed it has carbon in it too.
