Hey guys,

I'm looking for some advice. I've just noticed that the booklet that came with my tank and filter said I should replace the sponge and activated carbon every five weeks. Wouldn't this cause problems with my nitrate levels, causing me to cycle my tank again?

Thanks

the carbon will need replacing though as it is only useful for a few weeks, you don't have to have carbon in there the sponge is vital though as your good bacteria is in there only ever give it a gentle clean in tank water or as you say it will need cycling again.

Cheers for clearing that up for me. I was a little confused when it said replace every five weeks.

Yes, agree with the comments made. The carbon is actually usually only useful for 3 days and then is ready to be thrown out and replaced. This is one of the main reasons it is usually just kept on the shelf for special purposes.
