Hi everyone,
Got some mature media, looks like some type of medium/small rocks from a local fish store (i looked at the fish and they were all in good health) to get my cycle moving. The assistant got it from some type of collection where all the water from the tanks was running through (could have been a massive filter or something) but i added some into my filter and the rest into the aquarium after a big water change. The problem is the fish keeps developing more and more splits as there are about four now with one more developing. I think he already has fin rot which i am treating with lots of water changes, aquarium salt and lowering the filter rate. I am also going to black out his tank as he flares 24/7.
I'm keeping up with regular water changes (2-3 50% a day) and keeping my eye on the ammonia count etc. Before someone says, my tap water comes out as 0.25 ppm of ammonia so i am using Prime.
I've got Kanaplex/kanamycin being shipped in and it will take about a week to get here, but i was wondering what this would do to my filter when i add it =/
I did have something else by king British but once added the fish acted funny so i immediately removed it.
What else should i do for the fin rot and what should i expect from this mature media, is it going to work as it is not a piece of sponge/filter?
___________
API liquid test
Tank size:25 litre
pH: 7.4-7.6
ammonia:0.25ppm
nitrite: 0 ppm (did hit bottle hard to shake it up)
nitrate: about 20-30
kH: I dont have a test for this
gH:I do not have a test for this - both of these i did have stripes some time ago shown high GH and medium KH (very rough guess)
tank temp:26 c constant
Tank has been running for a month.
Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): Splitting (small part of tail fallen off) Redness and black webbing around tips of fins. No behavioral or appetite changes, flares basically all the time so added a black bg to the tank.
Volume and Frequency of water changes: Use to be nearly 100% a day now 2 times 50% a day.
Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Prime and aquarium salt
Tank inhabitants: one male betta fish
Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): Nothing new, one big aquarium friendly ornament and three silk plants
