Splenden hybrids

I'm not planning to breed hybrids, but was just idly wondering what species can hybridize with splendens? I know imbellis can, but are there any others?

Breed hybrid? Like crossing between betta and chiclid or parrot???
If they are betta cross with betta, I think it is ok and I don't call it hybrid. Like people too. Cross breed between black and asian or white with mexican. i called it hybrid when you cross a human with a monkey. LOL

i would rather you didn't. anyways, unless you have smaragdina or mahachai on hand imbellis is about the only one you can x, seeing as bubblenesters and mouth brooders don't mix.

Oh no worries, I have no intention of breeding any hybrids
I'm just a total biology nut, so these are the kind of things I ponder in my spare time

I knew you couldn't mix mouthbrooders with bubblenesters, but I wasn't sure if all the bubblenesters are even compatible with splendens? I am about to go pick up a little smaradina male at my LFS today, but I'm not going to breed him unless I can find a smaragdina female to go with him sometime soon.

But if you bread two zebra cichlid species those are considerd hybrids, why would that be any diffrent.

It's not.
Betta splendens is a different species from inbellis, smaragdina, mahachai, etc, and when you cross two different species you get a hybrid... them's the breaks.
Yeevia's analogy to human races is like crossing two splendens of different colours or tail types... same species, different morph

but they all go by betta as the family name, which still puts them in the family. Zebras all go by the name Metriaclima, but some do have the diffrent name at the end ( I have no idea what they are called) which would make them a seperate species as well, no?

It's closer than family even, it's genus.
The full scientific name for an animal is written as Genus species, so yeah, the name following Metriaclima would be the species. The internet says Maylandia is an alternate genus that will probably be used more often when refering to zebras in the future

For those interested, the full taxonomy for Betta spledens would be:
Kingdom animalia (animals)
Phlum chordata (those with a notochord and spinal chord)
Class actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes)
Order perciformes (perch-like)
Family belontiidae (gouramies and labyrinthfishes)
Genus betta (warrior)
Species splendens (splendid/beautiful)

Synirr. I like to ask a question since beginning of this year but you guys might laugh at me. OK. I just don't get it why my first red chilli babies has one blue baby in it. I just posting at Kelly post. I really have no clue and people said don't mix red line and blue line. Somehow one turn to blue. I remembered when frys moment, she is the only one brown color than the all sibling which is kind of light pale or yellow white. Check her out. any clue? I am really lost at that and don't know the answer.
