species question..

It was of a grayish color with a lot of uneven black + white patches on it's body, and the unusual thing was, it was sorta filtering the sand from the bottom. By this I mean it would take a gulp of the sand and you could see it filtering out from his gill area. I'm just curious as to what type of fish this is.

probably a goby of some sort - can you give more description - e.g. size,shape etc.

definately a goby. It eats the infauna ( or fauna?) in the sand. Good for the tank. THey also pile up stuff to make a cave for it and a pistol shrimp.
