How do I tell the "rareness" of a betta? Do I look at color? Tail? This weekend I found a black Plakat, I bought him =) I just buy what I like. Is that how it usually is or is there a certain "quality" about a betta?

Well generally, it depends on colour and tail type: veiltails are not thought of as being rare, for example. Although I love mine anyway.

Halfmoons are usually the hardest tail type to come by, and true purple bettas are very rare.

It depends on where you live, in the USA people have great breeders and can have fish shipped to them, same in Thailand. But for example, I live in Australia, and the only bettas I've seen here are veiltails, crowntails and some plakats.

At my LFS, They're selling Giank Plakats. They're called "Champion Bettas" which go for $12.99. That a good deal? These guys are BIG.

The ones in the store are probably half giant because I've seen pure giants start at $50. The half giants (still get huge) on the net were selling for $5 + shipping which is about $10-25. I'd love a half giant! IF you want one, the store isn't over pricing them.

I went by Kaz's this weekend to get a new aquarium for my Mini South Sea community.

The guy's a real horse trader. Ya gotta watch yourself with him. I asked what he could offer me in a Whisper Filter for the new 40 usg. He said $29. I said,"It's big enough for the 40 gal?" "Yeah!" he replied with a hesitation. When I got home it's for a 30 usg max. His name by the way is Richard.

Anyway. He said he was getting some Giants in a few. I didn't ask how much. Not going to him. I'm personally more interested in peaceful show fish--plucky, but cool. He stock the fighters.

Haha, here in the maritimes plakats are VERY rare no matter which colours. All they sell are VT's. Wouldn't surprise me if I was the only one in the maritimes that has plakats now :)
