;) With all these successful spawns I'm beginning to wonder just what everyone does with all the fry? My space is very limited and I can imagine that others have the same problem... so what happens to them?

Good question!

I've only got one spawn and there are only 22 fry so not like some that have hundreds. I've just had to jar 3 guys who were getting very nippy and have so far used my floating breeding traps. I have heard people use those beanie display boxes but I wonder where they get them from :dunno: they look pricey on ebay. the jars I had saved look way too small to me so would be interested in what others use :)

My lfs have agreed to take any fry that I don't want to keep but I'm hoping to save at least one male and some females

two male don't forget your sons fish.......and i got some beanies for a £0.90 plus vat 200 of them but had to open a account with the wholesaler

One breeder was giving them to members of the forums.
I think another may have been selling them to members to raise money for Tsunami releif efforts.

Well, it depends on who you're talking about. In terms of housing? Beanies or large take out containers for the males, females go into a female community tank when they're old enough.

My first few spawns were quite small, so that wasn't a problem. The next one...well, my boyfriend mentioned making space for another large tank, and if we can do that I'll be sitting pretty. Otherwise, beanies and large rubbermaid containers for these batches.

Did you mean more how do we pawn them off? Once again, depends on who you are. A number of us are members of the IBC and will be showing our fish this season. So here's what happens to my fish:

The "A+" quality fish - I keep for future spawnings, or give/trade to a fellow breeder who knows their worth.
The "A/B+" quality fish - these are the show fish
The "B" quality or lower - Sell to lfs, sell to folks online, adopt out

Don't know if that helps. They can be tough to get rid of if you don't have a plan in place ahead of time. Other folks let the babies battle it out in the spawn tank, where only the strong survive. Or cull a lot along the way. Or have a whole lotta room... -_-

For some reason glancing over that I read 'Sorrell" in that sentence  I was gonna say hey now :sly:  I need to wake up :S

Nope, you're up there in the "breeders that know their worth" section, my dear....

Good deal, too many double L's and o's in that phrase just threw me off in the wee hours of 10 AM :look:

as a non-breeder who has never even seen a show..i have a dumb question...

why don't you show the A+ fish and then breed them? :dunno:

That's actually a really good question, and in theory, I'd love to do that. However, most of us are lucky if there's one show in our local area - many of the shows are far away, and I can't afford to go to them between the plane ticket and hotel. One day I hope to be able to go to a couple a year, but for now, only my fish go. This will be my first year showing, so we'll see how it goes.

So, say you have a fish you really, really want to breed. You send him to a show. Usually he'll get there with no problem - usually. Then he goes into the show, into different water then he's used to, gets looked at, made to flare, lots of folks looking at him.

After the judging, show entrants have two options - sell the fish at the show auction, or pay (plenty) for the fish to be repacked and shipped home.

I can't afford to spend a bunch of money getting fish shipped two ways, and then take the chance that the fish will find the two-way shipping and the show too stressful and die en route or when they get home.

So, if he stays and is auctioned, you might pick up a few bucks to cover entry fees and the cost of shipping the fish in. I've seen auction fish go from $3.00 - $100+.

Having superior fish for a breeding program is more important to me then sending my very best to all the shows. Now, if you have a massive amount of great fish, maybe you'll keep some and send some.

Another benefit of auctioning them off is it gives breeders across the country the ability to buy quality fish without paying for shipping, and perhaps infuse their lines with some new blood for an outcross. This results in stronger, less inbred fish.

I would definitely recommend looking to see if any IBC shows are within your local area. Not only is it a neat experience, you can get some unbelievable deals on really sweet fish.
