Spastic Blue Ram

My German Blue Rams are lovely and loving each other. We thought maybe the female was too young to mate but they are inseparable and lately she's becoming rather aggressive toward her tank mates. She's displaying a really pink belly and they flare a lot at each other and me.

Today was weird tho - Elvis was fully spastic. He wasn't scratching against anything, just shaking and jerking around. Priscilla wasn't bothered at all, she stayed with her face toward his belly.

Is this normal?

shaking and jerking around... can you describe it a little more? head shaking and vibrating? whole body jerking oddly, sudden quick movements around the tank, almost uncontrollable? if it's the former, it's normal courting behaviour. The latter could mean a problem. The main thing to look for is if the fish appears to be in control of the movement.

Spastic describes the fishes movements . How that's degrading ?




These movements could be part of the spawning , or it could be a sign of something else .


Does he do it all the time , or just when he's near the female ?


If he does it all the time he could be ill , shaking and shimmying can be signs parasites , could even be swim a bladder problem , or something else .

However if these movements appear to be controlled jerking movements with fins flared , swimming forward and backward , it could just be his way of putting on a display for a female or to show another male who he is .

to get back on track it, I sounds like they are mating, body shaking is often a sign of iminate breeding in most new worlds.

Thanks for the replies. I've only seen him do it once. It looked too fast to be controlled but on the other hand, he didn't go anywhere, he was in control of his space....

In other words, Elvis looked like he was having a spasm. Not sure how that is degrading. Very confused here.

That's a peacock gudgeon (not his pic), and he currently has a whole tank of fry from his gudgeons
