I need to get some top dwelling fish for my 240l aquarium. Everything I have currently is sticking to the bottom half of the tank - including my 25 silvertip tetras :-(. The fish I want must be small and South/Central American. I know you're all going to say hatchets. Hatchets seem very hard to get in my area due to the water being hard and alkaline. Are there any other fish than hatchets that are from this area, if not could you give me ideas of where I could buy hatchets (Cambridgeshire area, UK) and types of hatchets.

Thank you,

African Butterflyfish are odd... I HAD two but one decided to find the 1in x 1in hole in my lid and decided to jump :(

the 1 I have left over is still cool

http://shop.sweetkno...Categories/1/12, Thoracocharax stellatus seeming to be the "giants" of the Hatchet world

Pencilfish are another option.

They may be excellent jumpers, but I think even the Atlantic Ocean is a bit too much for them

Swordtails are surface dwellers from Central America (as are guppies)

I think the only one there that's South American is Splash Tetra - although I've never seen them for sale. So I'm afraid I won't be buying any of those. Thanks for your comment though.

As stated the guppie and swordtail are commonly sold which are top dwelling species, hatchets also which some look amazing when kept in groups, pencil fish are some amazing fishies to keep, for example "Nannostomus rubrocaudatus"

Have you seen those place tetra breeding, amazing stuff, hope the tank here was set up with this in mind,

Kudos to you for keeping it Cam/Sam as well :)

It's very close to all South American to be honest, just loved Cryptoheros Cutteri so much I had to have them, regardless of the fact they're Central American. And to be honest.. there are 2 Flying Foxes, just for keeping the hair algae at bay. They will probably be moved to another tank though, as they grow. I loved the idea of a themed tank so I tryed my best to stick to it, regardless of all the African and Asian fish in my head saying 'buy me, BUY ME!!'.

Thank you,
