I'm sorry guys, I bet you get newbies passing through asking questions all the time. I'll try not to ask too many silly ones, and I have done a fair bit of reading, but there's nothing quite like experience! I have a few questions:

[1] Can I use something like an AquaOne tank for a nano? I like the "cubicular" type shape, and the all-in-one aspect of it with the hood. I'm also a bit restricted on space, so another long tank would be pushing it.

[2] How hard/easy would it be to change the lighting in one of those tanks? Would I be able to get the lights I need into the hood? And I'm also not quite sure what lights I'll need, keeping in mind that in months to come I'd like to have some soft corals.

[3] Do I need filtration other than LR? The mechanics of a sump/refugium are a little beyond me, but if needed could I use some other type of filter? Also on the topic of equipment, in your opinion, what gallon/litre per hour powerhead would be best? I've read 20x the volume of the tank, is that okay? For some reason when I think of that I think of a sandstorm in a teacup!

[4] When cycling the tank, is the die-off from the LR enough for the cycle or do I have to supplement it with ammonia from another source?

[5] If I was aiming for a 20 gallon tank, would it be reasonable to expect to have 2 fish in there? I'd love to have an ocellaris clown and a purple firefish, just not sure of the tank would be big enough for them both.

[6] Are there any particular brands of RO unit you'd recommend? I'll probably be buying one off eBay, but at first will probably get water from the LFS as I'm looking at around $AU200 for a unit and don't want hubby's head to explode from the cost.

I appreciate you probably get a lot of threads like this, I just want you to know that I'm not going to go out and buy a tank tomorrow and throw a few fish in. I know it will cost quite a bit of money, and I'm prepared for the cost and the time it takes. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give! :)

:hi: to the best section on the TFF website.

1)I think I found a link on that tank. It looks similar to an Eclipse type tank. Do you have all the specs on it?

2) If it is similar to Eclipse, upgrading can be difficult. You could ask around and see if there is a 'retrofit' made for that type of hood.

3) Read first: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=135909

4) LR is all you need

5) 2 for a 20 is perfect

6) Not sure what brands they have downunder. AquaSafe and FilterDirect are solid ones here in the US on Ebay This type would be fine: http://cgi.ebay.com/6-WATER-FILTER-REVERSE...1QQcmdZViewItem

It may pay to order one in the US if the shipping is not high. They sell on Ebay for $65 US. SH

Revision one:

Tank

The AquaOne tank looks like it'll be hell on a stick to change anything on. It comes with 2x11w lights that aren't a "standard" size. Seems that'll be about as efective as a mouse running around holding a candlestick in the hood. :sly: So I was thinking I could use a 2ft tank and make a stand and hood. When I say I'll make it, I mean with help from my hubby and FIL, who are qualified tradies.

The only problem is that I have a 2ft tank, it's 12 inches high and 12 inches wide, which gives me near on 15 gallons. But I have my heart set on 2 fish, so I've been looking around and I can get a 2ft long x 12 inch wide x 18 inch high tank for $30. This will give me 22 gallons, but I think I'll run into problems with the lights because of the depth.

Lights

If I'm doing a DIY hood I can put lights and fans in. If low-moderate lighting is 5 watts/gallon of compact flourescent lights, if I can possibly go over that, will that improve my lighting for the corals? [Keep in mind I know NOTHING about lights] Or am I better off to suck it up and just pay out for T8 lights? If I get the deep tank are normal lights going to get low enough in?

Equipment

HOB, heater for whatever size tank I get, powerhead 20x the tank amount [although I still picture the fish being blown around in a sandstorm!], refractometer, RO unit of some description.

Other stuff

I found a place that sells cured LR. And another place that sells aragonite substrate. Cleanup crew is a bit thin on the ground around here :sly: One place has "algae snails" but only a couple. That might be putting the cart before the horse, I don't mind travelling further afield for those kinds of things.

So much to plan! What do you think I should do about the tank?

If you tank is going to be deeper than 18-21 inches, metal halide might be better. Compact (PC) lighting tho is very versatile. We all don't like the watts/gal rule, but, as a rough guide, 5 and higher is good.

Always go for wider than deeper if possible tank wise. Easier to aquascape and better light penetration. SH
