To outline the situation:

Within a 4ft tank there are;-

5 congo tetras (2m3f)
1 dwarf gourami
1 betta (in a lil box)
1 bristlenose
3 banded rainbowfish (2m1f)
1 Whiptail catfish

Recently we had an outbreak of ich (about 9 days ago), and have been treating (seems to be clearing up)

However more recently (about 1-2 days) one of the male congo tetras suddenly had a bulging sore on the side of him.. it pushes several of his scales out and it looks red and nasty.. you can see some sort of white stuff inside.. it looks not good :(

Any ideas what this could be?

(currently we are treating with wardleys fungus-aid which has got malachite green in it among a whole heap of other stuff.. )

Thanks :)

Sorry I've not heard of that one

I have had the same symptoms with a lot of my rainbow fish. Does the sore look like a little volcano with a white peak? If so then I'm sad to say that none of my fish have survived it. They got the sore, bloated up (sometimes with pop eye), tended to excreat stringy white feaeces and then died. All this took about 1-2 weeks to take place. I have tried treating with loads of antibacterial treatments with no luck. In fact I have one in a hospital tank now and I'm not sure he's going to be alive when I get home. I'm currently trying a double dose of eSHa antibacterial stuff as a last ditch attempt to save him. Not holding my breath though.

Hope you have better luck.

If the stomache is swollen and the scales are protruding out then it could be dropsy.

Not sure about the white stuff so could be another bacterial/fungal infection.

If you have a hospital tank I would suggest seperating the affected fish just in case it is contageous.

Thanks for the replies :)

The stomach doesnt appear to be protruding and since we recently had an outbreak of ICH we are guessing its a secondary bacterial infection, it seems to be going down and looking less nasty so thats good.
